Ice skating is one of the best ways to embrace the winter chill.
In addition to the gorgeous go-to Blue Cross River Rink right on the Delaware River, Philadelphia has a handful of options for those looking to lace up and hit the ice this season ? and none of them include any back-woods potential polar bear plunges.
This city has a good number of public rinks, and luckily for the not-so-winter-friendly folk, many of them are indoors.
Here are a few spots to consider for ice skating this season:
? Blue Cross RiverRink: Take in one of the most breathtaking views the city has to offer while you glide alongside the Delaware on the Blue Cross RiverRink, an Olympic-sized ice rink at Penn?s Landing. And don?t worry if it?s a little brisk; the RiverRink features an indoor heated pavilion with a snack bar and game room. A live DJ spins every Friday and Saturday from 9 p.m.-midnight to keep you moving.
? The Penn Ice Rink at the Class of 1923 Arena: Even after more than 40 years of serving University City, The Penn Ice Rink is back for yet another season on the ice. Home to collegiate hockey teams from Penn, Wharton, Drexel and St. Joe?s, the rink hosts Public Skating, Figure Skating, Broomball, Roller Sport and new this year, Shinny: adult, no-check, no referee, co-ed, open-to-all ice hockey on Friday mornings.
? Laura Sims Skate House: Philadelphia Flyers owner Ed Snider, Mayor Nutter and other community leaders celebrated the re-opening of a newly converted indoor ice rink in West Philadelphia last year. The Laura Sims Skate House is open the the public from October through January. Snider Hockey provides free ?learn to skate? programs, public skating opportunities, ice hockey instruction and league play.
? Rizzo Ice Rink: Self-dubbed as ?the best kept secret in town,? the Rizzo Rink is open for public skating every day of the week except for Mondays, and all you have to pay is a $3 skate rental fee! Public skate goes from November to January and skate hours, hockey league practices, hockey teams and camps are all catered to specific age categories from tots to seniors.
? Scanlon Ice Rink: Kensington has an ice skating rink, too. Play on an ice hockey team, take lessons or just skate on your own. Located indoors and offering tons of other recreational programs on site, Scanlon has many great options for staying active throughout the cold months.
? Simons Ice Rink: This place has everything from chess to spoken word, to art and sewing to ice skating. The rink is open from now until February and they?ve expanded their hours this year to allow for even more public skate time.
? Tarken Ice Rink: Public skate hours are perfect for any schedule, and Tarken even offers figure skating lessons so you can learn the moves that will make all your friends jealous.
