Atari celebrates 40 years of Pong with new, free iOS Pong game, custom portable Xbox 360

Atari celebrates 40 years of Pong with new, free iOS Pong game, sweet portable Xbox 360

Atari's celebrating 40 years of arcade classic Pong today by releasing ... another version of Pong. Pong World is being dubbed "the first-ever official new Pong game on iOS" (despite our search of the App Store dictating the contrary), but more importantly, it's totally free and it's already available on the iOS App Store (see gameplay below the break). The iPhone / iPad / iPod Touch game started life as one of many entries in Atari's "Pong Indie Developer Challenge," which pitted devs against each other for $50K and lead representation on the big four-zero celebration.

Should the free game not be enough for you, you could always vie for one of the crazy sweet portable Xbox 360s (seen above) on Atari's Facebook page. Why yes, that is a custom LCD screen attached to a modded Xbox 360, which also happens to resemble a classic Atari console. And yes, we agree, it is totally sweet.

Syria jets bombard rebel targets on airport road

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian air force jets bombarded rebel targets on Friday close to the Damascus airport road and a regional airline said the violence had halted international flights to the capital.

Activists said security forces clashed with rebels trying to topple President Bashar al-Assad around Aqraba and Babilla districts on the southeastern outskirts of the Damascus which lead to the international airport.

Internet connections and most telephone lines were down for a second day, the worst communications outage in a 20-month-old uprising in which 40,000 people have been killed, hundreds of thousands have fled the country, and millions been displaced.

The mostly Sunni Muslim rebels who are battling Assad, from Syria's Alawite minority linked to Shi'ite Islam, have been making gains around Syria by overrunning military bases and have been ramping up attacks on Damascus, his seat of power.

A resident of central Damascus told Reuters he could see black smoke rising from the east and the south of the city on Friday morning and could hear the constant boom of shelling.

"Airlines are not operating to Damascus today," said a Dubai-based airline official. EgyptAir and Emirates suspended flights to Syria on Thursday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based opposition monitoring group, said jets were bombarding targets in rural areas around Aqraba and Babilla, where rebels clashed with Assad's forces.

The Observatory's director, Rami Abdelrahman, said the airport road was open, but there was minimal traffic.

Syrian authorities said late on Thursday that the airport road was safe after security forces cleared it of 'terrorists' - the label Damascus uses to describe Assad's armed opponents.

MORTAR FIRED

Rebels said that at least one mortar round was fired at the airport during clashes on Thursday.

"We want to liberate the airport because of reports we see and our own information we have that shows civilian airplanes are being flown in here with weapons for the regime. It is our right to stop this," rebel spokesman Musaab Abu Qitada said.

U.S. and European officials said rebels were making gains in Syria, gradually eroding Assad's power, but said the fighting had not yet shifted completely in their favor.

A Damascus-based diplomat said he believed the escalation in fighting around the capital was part of a government offensive which aimed to seal off the state-controlled centre of the city from rebel-held rural areas to the south and east.

Activists say Assad's forces have also been shelling the Daraya district to the southwest of the city, trying to prevent rebels from cementing their hold of an area which could give them a presence in a continuous arc from the northeast to southwest of the capital's outer districts.

"I don't know whether the shelling has succeeded in pushing back the FSA (rebels) - experience shows that they return very quickly anyway," the diplomat said. "We seem to be entering a decisive phase of the Damascus offensive."

Syria's Internet shut down on Thursday, a move which activists blamed on authorities but which authorities variously attributed to a 'terrorist' attack or a technical fault.

CloudFlare, a firm that helps accelerate Internet traffic, said on its blog that saboteurs would have had to simultaneously cut three undersea cables into the Mediterranean city of Tartous and also an overland cable through Turkey in order to cut off the entire country's Internet access.

Highlights from the Fed's US economic survey

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A Federal Reserve survey released Wednesday found the economy grew at a steady pace from October through early November in most parts of the country, helped by a pickup in consumer spending and home sales.

The Fed said growth improved in nine of the Fed's 12 regional banking districts. The other three ? Philadelphia, New York and Boston ? were affected by Superstorm Sandy.

The report, known as the Beige Book, is based on anecdotal information from the regional districts.

      Here are some highlights:

BOSTON (includes Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and part of Connecticut):

The economy expanded more slowly. Retailers cited mixed sales and manufacturers noted slower growth.

NEW YORK (includes New York and parts of Connecticut and New Jersey):

Economic activity weakened since the last report, largely reflecting widespread disruptions caused by Superstorm Sandy. Retailers reported fairly strong sales in October but said the storm severely hampered activity since then.

PHILADELPHIA (includes Delaware and parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey):

The economy grew modestly until the end of October, when Sandy slowed business activity and cut power for millions.

CLEVELAND (includes Ohio, Kentucky and parts of Pennsylvania and West Virginia):

Manufacturing orders and production both increased, helping the economy grow modestly. Housing and non-residential construction activity improved with particular strength in apartment building. Retailers reported higher sales.

RICHMOND (includes Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, District of Columbia and part of West Virginia):

Economic activity strengthened. Manufacturing improved and retail sales increased moderately. Mortgage refinancing bolstered consumer lending and home sales rose.

ATLANTA (includes Georgia, Alabama, Florida and parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee):

Economic activity increased. Retail sales grew mildly. Auto dealers reported stronger sales. Tourism remained robust. But manufacturing activity softened.

CHICAGO (includes Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan and parts of Illinois and Indiana):

Economic activity continued to expand slowly. Businesses expressed concerns about pending tax increases and government spending cuts that could take effect in January if lawmakers and the Obama administration don't strike a budget deal before then.

ST. LOUIS (Includes Missouri, Arkansas and Kentucky, and parts of Illinois, Indiana, Tennessee and Mississippi):

The economy expanded at a moderate pace. Retail and auto sales increased over year-earlier levels. Home sales continued to improve while commercial real estate conditions remain mixed.

MINNEAPOLIS (includes Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and parts of Wisconsin and Michigan):

The economy grew moderately, helped by improvement in consumer spending, tourism and professional services. Construction and home sales are increasing at double-digit rates in some areas.

KANSAS CITY (includes Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and parts of Missouri and New Mexico):

Retail sales strengthened and businesses were optimistic that the trend could continue through the holidays. Commercial and residential construction improved, while home prices were expected to rise because of sales gains.

DALLAS (includes Texas and parts of New Mexico and Louisiana):

The economy expanded modestly with reports on manufacturing and transportation services mixed. Auto sales were flat. Home sales and construction increased and energy production remained robust.

SAN FRANCISCO (includes California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Hawaii and Alaska):

Economic activity expanded modestly. Inflation of goods and services remained subdued and upward pressures on wages were limited. Retailers expected sales gains during the holiday shopping season.

With Some Geeky Tweaking, China's Web Users Can Easily Leap ...

While it?s worth remembering that most Chinese web users don?t bother to circumvent the Great Firewall internet restrictions (as folks have ample homegrown social and entertainment services), the WSJ reckons that more people than ever are actually leaping the wall to check out YouTube or Twitter thanks to some fairly simple geeky tweaking.

All it takes is for the ?hosts? file inside a Windows or Mac computer ? or an Android phone ? to be modified with a list of alternative IP addresses for a blocked site you might want to access. This can be done for free. Increasingly, more and more tech-savvy Chinese web users are helping out by maintaining updated lists of which hosts tweaks still work, and then making these lists available online. Right now, these can be found all over the web in Chinese, even on Baidu?s Wenku e-books platform, as pictured here:

Crowdsourced lists of ?host? file tweaks help Chinese web users access blocked sites such as YouTube. Click to enlarge.

One such individual helping his fellow netizens leap the Great Firewall is Felix Hsu, whom the WSJ talked to. He says, ?Lots of netizens are eager to get to know what?s happening behind the wall, but it?s not easy for them.? Felix helps run a site (sadly, no link is given) that collates these workarounds. He explains that the free service they?re providing (which was started in October 2011) saw a massive spike in traffic recently as China?s leadership changeover was met with deliberate throttling and slowing of many Chinese internet services. For one 24-hour period at the start of this month, every single Google service was blocked in China ? before some of them (obviously not the long-blocked ones like G+ or YouTube) became accessible again.

I get the feeling that most Chinese people who do this are only interested in finding fun things that most of do to pass the time on the web, such as watching kitten videos on YouTube. Nonetheless, Chinese authorities keep a close eye on overseas sites and often block those that are deemed to be carrying news that?s too controversial. That?s why the New York Times is the latest high-profile site to be blocked in the country.

Jacob Devaney: Environmental Education Initiative in California and ...

After millennia of battling harsh elements living in the natural world, humans have created their own environments with climate-controlled houses and cities that limit the inconvenience of natures' intrusions. Except for moments like Hurricane Sandy or Katrina, we can mostly live untouched by nature if we choose to, but there is a down-side. We ARE nature. Many of us have completely lost touch with the interconnected web of natural systems that sustain us and this is a formula for disaster, natural disaster. This topic, and all that it implies, has finally become an accepted part of our national discourse and most agree that the journey starts with education and action on all levels of society. It is not surprising that California is leading the charge with solutions from the community to state level.

The California Initiative for Education and the Environment states on their website "California is currently poised to lead the nation in environmental literacy with the Education and Environment Initiative (EEI). More can and should be done to understand our relationship with the environment, and we believe the best place to begin is in California's classrooms." Though I feel that the woods or climbing a tree might be a better place to start and I'm sure the folks at Children and Nature would agree, California has once again done the right thing by investing in two of our most valuable resources, youth and the environment.

California has always been known for its technology, innovation, green initiatives, and movie stars adopting social causes. San Francisco Bay Area is a place where it is normal to go to a luncheon with over 1,000 people hosted by The Pachamama Foundation and listen to Lynn Twist talk about changing the human "dream" (paradigm) from one that sees nature as something to be exploited for economic value to a "dream" (paradigm) that views everything as interconnected and sacred with inherent spiritual value. It is a region where the word "Bioneer" emerges by mixing the word "pioneer" with "biology," thus describing an emerging culture of social and scientific innovators who are mimicking nature's operating instructions to serve human ends while enriching the web of life. It's a place where veggie-powered school busses painted with rainbow colors visit schools and plant fruit trees thanks to organizations like Common Vision. Environmental literacy in California may be more advanced than in any modern city on the planet, but it is quite primitive compared to indigenous tribes around the globe who still live close to nature.

While I was in San Francisco, I had the pleasure to spend some time with Michael Leifer, co-founder of ecodads (Eco-Dads) who are spearheading a movement to fix education, create a new economy, and inspire environmental stewardship. Basically ecodads are creating and giving away free "Environmental Edutainment" apps based on the states' Common Core Standards and Next Generation Science Standards and district superintendents,' CAL\EPA, CalRecycle, Cal State Parks and the California Dept of Ed's CREEC Resource show support. The goal of these fun, interactive apps is to put the curriculum into the hands of the students and give them access to all of the separate and valuable education resource providers. Ecodads are blazing the trail for "this type of private public partnership that brings new innovation, collaboration and passion to the task of supporting students' access to powerful learning opportunities in environmental education", as Kris Munro, Assistant Superintendent, Santa Cruz City Schools states.

I think we'd all like to see projects like this spread across the globe and we can't afford to sit and wait for others to do it. If you like this idea and would like to see it happen, you can learn more about the project here; there is also a video posted below. Crowd-sourcing ideas, collaborators, and funders is democracy in action. Thanks to the Internet, people are more empowered to effect their community and social systems from a grass-roots level and the tech-savvy communities in California are making it happen.

As I wrote previously in "Comics Instead of Textbooks", the days of heavy, visually non-stimulating text books will soon be behind us. With models like the ecodads above, and the future collaboration between gaming, and visual media experts, school looks like its about to get a whole lot more fun and effective. Climbing a tree will never be obsolete, luckily there is more to learning than information, kids need to play. The ultimate goal is to bridge the connection so that kids start to see every moment as an opportunity for learning and understand at an early age that they are part of the interconnected web of nature. As people wake up to their impact and responsibility as participants in their community and as stewards of the planet, we will be creating a brighter future. It starts with kids, it starts with education.

The whole notion of apps, iPads, and mobile devices for learning is very exciting and kids will love to be using the best of contemporary technology as part of their education. Let's encourage more collaborations across disciplines, and community initiated involvement in re-shaping education. What will you initiate in your town, city or region?

Eventually, technology may help us reintegrate with the natural environment in a healthy way. Perhaps initiatives and conversations like this as well as organizations like the ones mentioned above will become commonplace everywhere, not just in California. If we are lucky enough to see this emerge as a cultural revolution that honors nature, raises eco-literate children, and embraces the whole human community as one global family, then perhaps we can enjoy the comforts of our cozy modern life without the threats associated with a warming planet. Humans can play a role in becoming part of the immune system of our planet or staying part of the disease, the choice is ours.

Study shows surge of bad disease genes in Europe

      By Maggie Fox, NBC News

A scan of all the mutations in the human gene map shows something surprising ? people of European descent are evolving fast, and not for the better.

The study finds that in the past 5,000 years, European-Americans have developed a huge batch of potentially harmful genetic mutations ? many more than African-Americans.

The study, published in the journal Nature, may help explain why so many people develop diseases even though they don?t have common genetic mutations. It can also help explain why different people have so many different reactions to the same drug, said Joshua Akey of the University of Washington in Seattle who led the study.

It likely has to do with population explosion, Akey said. European populations expanded after the Ice Age ended and prosperous agricultural societies emerged. ?The number of mutations that exist is directly attributable to the population growth that happened in the last 5,000 years,? Akey told NBC News.

?The things that allowed us to go from millions to billions of has also been the same process that has been pumping in all these new mutations.?

Akey and colleagues at genetics institutions across the country examined the gene sequences of more than 6,500 people ? more than 4,200 European-Americans and 2,200 African-Americans. They were looking for small changes in the genetic code called single nucleotide variants ? one-letter differences in the genetic code of A,C, T and G.

They found ?an enormous excess of rare variants? in the European-Americans. And 73 percent of these mutations only appeared in the human genome in the past 5,000 to 10,000 years. Most were mutations that are known to weaken proteins, Akey said, and most of these harmful mutations were also in the people of European descent.

Now researchers are working to see which of these mutations might be associated with diseases. But many are in known disease-causing genes, such as the LAMC1 gene associated with premature ovarian failure, LRP1, which is linked with both Alzheimer?s disease and obesity and the CPE gene linked to hardening of the arteries.

Most are rare mutations ? meaning they only affect a few people. ?Some genes might be more disease-causing than other genes,? Akey said.

It may explain why it?s been so hard to find clear genetic links to many diseases. ?We have been looking for disease risk where it isn?t,? he said. ?The last five to 10 years have been dominated by looking for common genetic variations that dominate common diseases. There is a lot of disease risk that is unexplained. Maybe there are classes of mutations that haven?t been looked at.?

The findings could explain why some people can smoke for a lifetime and never get lung cancer or heart disease, while someone else might suffer a heart attack despite having healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

It definitely shows evolution in action, Akey said. ?It?s just the process of evolution playing out in real time,? he said. ?The dramatic population expansions that occurred over the past couple thousand years had a profound consequence on our genetic variability.?

Genetic mutations usually occur by accident ? they are just mistakes that get made when DNA gets copied. They become important to evolution when they affect a person?s ability to survive and have children. The expansion of civilization, and the ability of societies to care for people who are less fit, was probably a factor in allowing these mutations to spring up, Akey said. ?I think that is undoubtedly true,? he said.

Some of the genes identified in the scan also affect peoples? response to drugs. That could explain why some people are helped, for example, by a cholesterol-lowering drug while others may not be. There wouldn?t have been much ?selective pressure? on these genes before the modern drug era, but that doesn?t mean the genes were not influenced by something else. ?It turns out that genes involved in adverse drug responses also have different biological roles,? Akey said ? for instance, detoxifying certain foods.

There may even be more evolution in the future, Akey predicted. One example ? phenylketonuria or PKU. It?s caused by a mutation in a gene that breaks down an amino acid called phenylalanine. People with PKU mutations must eat a strict, low-protein diet or they can develop seizures and mental retardation.

Now newborns are routinely tested for PKU so they can start the diet immediately and avoid any brain damage. Akey said because these kids can now grow up and lead normal lives, they will likely start having children and the gene may become more common in the population.

Building is expected to begin in the spring of 2013 with a move in date for the fall of 2015.

The hospital, designed by Andr? Ibghy Architects, will feature eight floors ? two below ground and six above.

Each floor will feature the colours and attractions of a different region of Canada. These concepts have not only been incorporated into the decor of the floors, but have also been integrated into the design of the various service, treatment and waiting areas.

The building?s interior design is also bright and airy, with a generous amount of large windows and several skylights inviting natural light deep into the heart of the structure.

The hospital will have 22 single-patient rooms and plans include several areas dedicated to families. There will be four operating rooms, which is double from the current facility. The new hospital will also include state of the art technology for teaching as well as expanded space dedicated to basic and clinical research.

Roundup: Our Winter 2012 Guide To Public Ice Skating In - Uwishunu

All season long, take in the breathtaking view overlooking the Benjamin Franklin Bridge at the Blue Cross RiverRink, just one of a handful of public ice skating rinks in the city. (Photo by G. Widman for GPTMC)

Ice skating is one of the best ways to embrace the winter chill.

In addition to the gorgeous go-to Blue Cross River Rink right on the Delaware River, Philadelphia has a handful of options for those looking to lace up and hit the ice this season ? and none of them include any back-woods potential polar bear plunges.

This city has a good number of public rinks, and luckily for the not-so-winter-friendly folk, many of them are indoors.

Here are a few spots to consider for ice skating this season:

? Blue Cross RiverRink: Take in one of the most breathtaking views the city has to offer while you glide alongside the Delaware on the Blue Cross RiverRink, an Olympic-sized ice rink at Penn?s Landing. And don?t worry if it?s a little brisk; the RiverRink features an indoor heated pavilion with a snack bar and game room. A live DJ spins every Friday and Saturday from 9 p.m.-midnight to keep you moving.

? The Penn Ice Rink at the Class of 1923 Arena: Even after more than 40 years of serving University City, The Penn Ice Rink is back for yet another season on the ice. Home to collegiate hockey teams from Penn, Wharton, Drexel and St. Joe?s, the rink hosts Public Skating, Figure Skating, Broomball, Roller Sport and new this year, Shinny: adult, no-check, no referee, co-ed, open-to-all ice hockey on Friday mornings.

? Laura Sims Skate House: Philadelphia Flyers owner Ed Snider, Mayor Nutter and other community leaders celebrated the re-opening of a newly converted indoor ice rink in West Philadelphia last year. The Laura Sims Skate House is open the the public from October through January. Snider Hockey provides free ?learn to skate? programs, public skating opportunities, ice hockey instruction and league play.

? Rizzo Ice Rink: Self-dubbed as ?the best kept secret in town,? the Rizzo Rink is open for public skating every day of the week except for Mondays, and all you have to pay is a $3 skate rental fee! Public skate goes from November to January and skate hours, hockey league practices, hockey teams and camps are all catered to specific age categories from tots to seniors.

? Scanlon Ice Rink: Kensington has an ice skating rink, too. Play on an ice hockey team, take lessons or just skate on your own. Located indoors and offering tons of other recreational programs on site, Scanlon has many great options for staying active throughout the cold months.

? Simons Ice Rink: This place has everything from chess to spoken word, to art and sewing to ice skating. The rink is open from now until February and they?ve expanded their hours this year to allow for even more public skate time.

? Tarken Ice Rink: Public skate hours are perfect for any schedule, and Tarken even offers figure skating lessons so you can learn the moves that will make all your friends jealous.

Perils of investing in mutual funds directly | Firstpost

      By Srikanth Meenakshi

Starting January 1, 2013, mutual fund investors in India will be able to invest in the so-called ?direct plans? of mutual fund schemes. These plans will be available when a person invests directly in a mutual fund company, without going through an advisor or an investment service.

The benefit will be that these plans will charge a lower expense ratio compared with the regular plans. Although the actual quantum of difference is not known at this time, speculation is that it would be between half a percent to one percent for equity funds, and less than half a percent for debt and liquid funds.

Should investors opt for these plans? Over the long run, will they stand to gain from choosing this method of investments? What will be the implications of doing so? To answer these questions, it is necessary to look at some current facts and analyse them logically.

      Importance of choosing good funds

The universe of investible funds is large ? just in the equity funds space, there are upwards of 200 funds to choose from. Including debt funds, the total set of funds available for investments is upwards of 1,500. A regular investor needs not more than 7-10 funds in their portfolio even if they are investing for multiple time-frames, financial goals etc.

Given this, the danger of choosing a wrong fund is more dire than choosing a more cost-effective ?mode? of investing. Looking at data, we can see that over the past periods of investments, there are significant gulfs between the best and the worst performing funds.

For a 10-year period, the gap is 23 percent per year! For a five-year period, it is more than 28 percent (see images below)! In fact, an investor over the last five years, would have lost money significantly with imprudent choices rather than making a reasonable, if relatively low, returns.

      Source: FundsIndia.com

Obviously, in this situation, choosing good funds makes a bigger impact than cost savings of a few fractions of a percentage point. But does advice really make a difference enabling investors to choose good funds? To try and answer this question, again, we turned to data.

      Value of advice

It is not as if this avenue of investment has been newly made available to investors. They have always had the option of investing directly with the mutual fund companies without the help of any investment service. There is even a mutual fund company ? Quantum AMC ? that gets most of its inflows directly from investors.

However, as per current industry statistics, only a very small fraction of investments come through in this direct route. Even if one looks at only retail investments that are predominantly in equity funds, less than 7-8% of the assets under management have come directly from the investors to the mutual fund schemes.

We were curious to see if there is a correlation between getting advice and investing in good schemes. Although one cannot get exact statistics on the performance of advised investments versus direct investments, we found a couple of data points that strongly support the hypothesis that a majority of investors today have done well with their investments.

If one looks at the five-year performance of all diversified equity funds, there have been 163 funds in this period. Of these 117, or 65% have beaten their respective benchmarks. However, the total AUM of these 65% of funds is significantly more than 65% of the AUM that is spread out among all the 163 funds. In fact, it is as high as 91%!

If one looks at the same figures for a three-year time frame, the numbers are similar ? 74% of the funds that have beaten the benchmark?s performance have 90% of the total AUM.

Though it does not prove it, this strongly suggests that retail investors today, who are overwhelmingly investing through advisory services, have done well with respect to their investment choices. They have invested in funds that have performed well rather than in lesser funds by a significant margin.

      Can Investors do it themselves?

This leads us to the third question. Is choosing funds that hard? Can the investors make these choices themselves? On this question, it is tough to find hard statistics to answer this question one way or the other. However, going by anecdotal evidence and experience, I would be inclined to answer the question in the negative.

Bell, Virgin Mobile Canada reportedly start unlocking iPhones, at a steep cost

Bell, Virgin Mobile Canada to start unlocking iPhones, at a steep cost

Canadians have had the option to buy a factory-unlocked iPhone for awhile, but liberating Apple's handset after the sale has been officially limited to Rogers and Fido customers. As long as MobileSyrup's leak is the real deal, though, subscribers to Bell and its Virgin Mobile branch can spring for an unlock as of today. That's good news for many, although the hurdle is once again the carrier's desire to keep customers from jumping ship. Those pursuing an unlock will supposedly need to be out of contract, skip any prepaid plans and pay a $75 fee -- in short, they're more likely to derestrict an old, well-worn iPhone than the iPhone 5 they bought last week. We'll just be happy to have another route to hardware independence, and hope that the mention of widened unlock eligibility in 2013 is more than just a rumor.
