Phones=Cancer

Hello Readers!

More people have a cell phone today compared to fifteen years ago. They have given us many benefits in today?s society but also new fears. The biggest debate being discussed is if cellphones cause brain tumors. A lot of people are skeptical to believe that they can but there are some things to consider when using a cell phone.

Doctor MehmetOz, a cardiothoracic surgeonand television show host, appeared on Good Morning America November 16, 2009 to talk about what in a phone can cause a brain tumor. When placing or receiving a call, your cell phone sends out radio frequency (RF) waves to receive a signal from the nearest tower using its antenna which is now usually built into the phone. When placed up against your head, the radio frequency waves are going into your brain which is what researchers think leads to tumors. Doctor Oz says that especially children are susceptible to the RF waves because they have thinner skulls and more brain fluid. The most surprising thing is that when you have bad reception, your phone is sending out more RF waves to find a signal so more are being sent to your brain.

Although there could still be significant findings in the future, most of the studies conducted are not conclusive about whether or not phones do cause tumors. The problem with these studies is that they need to be conducted over a long-term period. Most studies, for example The Study of Brain Tumors and Use of Cellular Telephones by the National Cancer Institute, are only run for an average of 4 years. It may take decades of cell phone use for a person to record anything significant. So whether you believe the theory or not, there are some precautions that can be taken.

The first precaution to take is to avoid talking when you are driving or are receiving low reception to reduce the RFs going into your head. Next, children should avoid talking on their cell phones and instead, try to text more. Kids under the age of fourteen are at higher risk for developing a tumor because of their thinner skulls. If there is a need to talk on one, have them use speaker phone. Even holding the phone four inches from the head reduces the RFs by 1000 times. Lastly, using a wireless head set reduces the RF waves as long as you don?t keep it on you all of the time.

Whether cell phones cause cancer or not will be debated for many more years but, you can never be too careful. Keep these precautions in mind and be on the lookout for new studies. Check out what else Doctor Oz has to say at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKXzHW9qMKE&feature=related.
