NEW YORK (AP) ? Long before he became a salsa sensation, Marc Anthony listened to the likes of Lionel Richie. Now he'll honor the pop legend as part of the Academy of Country Music's tribute to Richie next week.
This week, Richie released a collection of his classics performed with top country acts, and is set to appear at Sunday's ACM Awards. The next day, he'll be feted at an all-star concert.
Anthony is scheduled to perform Richie's song "Endless Love" with Sara Evans during the CBS special, which will air April 13 at 9 pm EDT. In a statement released Friday, Anthony said Richie was "one of the soundtracks of my life growing up." He also called Richie an icon and said he was honored to be a part of the tribute.
Declines in Caribbean coral reefs pre-date damage resulting from climate changePublic release date: 30-Mar-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Novel excavation technique attributes prior damage to land clearing and overfishing
The decline of Caribbean coral reefs has been linked to the recent effects of human-induced climate change. However, new research led by scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego suggests an even earlier cause. The bad news humans are still to blame. The good news relatively simple policy changes can hinder further coral reef decline.
Employing a novel excavation technique to reconstruct the timeline of historical change in coral reefs located on the Caribbean side of Panama, a team of scientists led by Scripps alumna Katie Cramer and current Scripps Professor of Oceanography and Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) Emeritus Staff Scientist Jeremy Jackson has determined that damage to coral reefs from land clearing and overfishing pre-dates damage caused by anthropogenic climate change by at least decades.
"This study is the first to quantitatively show that the cumulative effects of deforestation and possibly overfishing were degrading Caribbean coral and molluscan communities long before climate change impacts began to really devastate reefs," said lead author Cramer, currently based at the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network at the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Coral reefs have suffered alarmingly since the 1980s due to coral bleaching and coral disease, thought to stem from the warming of the oceans due to anthropogenic, or human-induced, climate change. However, until recently, the impact of prior human activities on Caribbean coral reefs had not been studied with experimental techniques.
Historical records and qualitative surveys provide hints that declines in corals in some parts of the Caribbean occurred as far back as the early 1900s after coastal lands began to be cleared to make way for plantations. However, the current study is the first to quantify the changes that reef corals and mollusks have undergone as a result of long-term stress caused by the deposition of silt, nutrients, and pollution onto coral reefs from land clearing and the depletion of reef fish that prevent algae from overtaking reefs.
"Because researchers did not really begin to study Caribbean reefs in detail until the late 1970s, we don't have a clear understanding of why these reefs have changed so dramatically since this time," said Cramer. "So, we set out to reconstruct an older timeline of change on reefs by looking at the remains of past reefs coral skeletons and mollusk shells."
To reconstruct this timeline, the team dug below modern reefs in incremental layers and, using radiocarbon dating of the coral skeletons they found, linked fluctuations in the types and numbers of coral and mollusks over time to historical records of land clearing. Changes in the relative numbers of these various species represent clear indicators of the overall health of the coral reef.
The team also improved upon the standard technique of taking long, narrow core samples of coral fossils that cannot track fluctuations in the numbers of larger species of coral.
"We wanted to look at the whole complement of the coral community," said Cramer.
To catalog the relative numbers of dozens of coral and molluscan species, the researchers dug two-foot-wide by three-foot-deep pits into reefs at several coastal lagoon and offshore sites near Bocas del Toro, Panama, that were heavily affected and less affected by land runoff, respectively. At each of these sites they also conducted surveys and recorded the composition of living corals.
"We dug up over a ton of coral rubble and tens of thousands of shells," said Cramer, who led the fieldwork at STRI and likened the laborious experience to doing underwater construction.
Systematically sifting through the coral and shell fossils, the scientists noted several indicators of environmental stress, including a decrease in the overall size of bivalves such as oysters, clams, and scallops, a transition from branching to non-branching species of coral, and large declines in the staghorn coral and the tree oyster, which were once the dominant coral and bivalve on these reefs.
These indicators were observed in layers of the excavated pits at coastal lagoon sites that were dated before 1960 and as far back as the 1800s, corresponding to a period of extensive deforestation in the Bocas del Toro region. Similar evidence of environmental stress at offshore sites was dated after 1960, indicating that the negative impacts of land clearing have more recently begun to affect reefs further offshore.
With the decline of the branching coral species, the reefs now have fewer nooks and crannies that are used as habitat for reef fish and other organisms. Also, the non-branching species that have taken their place grow at a much slower rate. "Consequently, there is less of a chance that the reefs will be able to keep up with sea level rise from climate change," said Cramer.
"Because the governments of the world have yet to undertake any meaningful efforts to mitigate climate change, it is of the utmost importance that locally caused stressors to reefs such as overfishing and deforestation are minimized," said Cramer. "Advocating for more intelligent use of land as well as implementing sustainable fisheries management, those are things that can be done right now."

The research team, which also includes Jill Leonard-Pingel of Scripps, Thomas Guilderson of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and Christopher Angioletti, will publish its findings in the April issue of Ecology Letters. An early online version has been released today.

Georgia, Seth, and Rene quickly cover the fallout of Chinese factory stories being faked, Apple’s cash balance announcement, and the week’s headlines, then dive deep into the 2012 iPad review,
Free agency has come screeching to a halt, but there are still some interesting names available on the open market.
Here?s a breakdown of the top ten players left unsigned on the PFT Hot 100.
1. Offensive tackle Marcus McNeill ? Released by San Diego on March 13, McNeill visited the Lions a day later but left without a contract. He was rumored to have meetings lined up with the Falcons and Chiefs, but they apparently fell through. While McNeill has two Pro Bowls and 82 starts at a premium NFL position on his resume at age 28, medical concerns have clearly hurt McNeill?s market value.
2. Offensive tackle Demetrius Bell ? Bell has drawn interest from the Redskins and Cardinals, and will visit the Packers later this week. Like McNeill, Bell is a 28-year-old starting-caliber left tackle who?s been plagued by injuries. Bell?s medical concerns aren?t as significant as McNeill?s, however, and it would be surprising if he wasn?t signed soon.
3. Linebacker David Hawthorne ? A beastly run defender, Hawthorne?s market appeared to be established when Stephen Tulloch (Lions) and Curtis Lofton (Saints) were signed. Hawthorne remains available, however, after visits with Detroit and New Orleans proved to be leverage plays by those teams. Adam Caplan did report on Tuesday that the Seahawks and Hawthorne ?continue to be in communication,? so perhaps he?ll re-sign with Seattle.
4. Linebacker London Fletcher ? Fletcher still hasn?t signed, but it?s been widely assumed that he?ll head back to D.C. Perhaps that?s why no other teams have seriously inquired. As Alper noted a couple of days ago, league-imposed cap penalties against the Redskins have affected negotiations with Fletcher.
5. Defensive end Andre Carter ? Carter racked up double-digit sacks in 14 games last year, but he hasn?t been signed because he?s still ?limping heavily? after a late-season quadriceps tear. Carter should find work quickly once he?s healthy.
6. Defensive end Matt Roth ? The Bengals are Roth?s only known free-agent visit, and their interest seems to have cooled after signing twin draft busts Jamaal Anderson and Derrick Harvey. Roth isn?t a bad pass rusher and sets the edge as a run defender. He can also play linebacker in a 3-4. It?s only a matter of time before he catches on somewhere.
7. Defensive tackle Aubrayo Franklin ? Franklin?s career peak was receiving the 49ers? franchise tag in 2010. His 2011 market was surprisingly slow, and he?s now going on age 32. Franklin is coming off a disappointing season in New Orleans, struggling for playing time. The 2011 game tape may be turning off teams.
8. Offensive tackle Kareem McKenzie ? The Giants have already cut ties publicly with McKenzie, their starting right tackle since the 2005 campaign. Going on age 33, he may have to wait for training camp to be signed.
9. Defensive end Luis Castillo ? A productive but injury-prone 3-4 defensive end, Castillo has visited the Patriots and Chiefs in free agency, but likely was offered only the veteran?s minimum after missing all but one game last season. The Chargers also have an offer on the table to keep him. Castillo is only 28 years old with plenty of starts on his resume.
10. Wide receiver Braylon Edwards ? The Jets have expressed some interest in the top wide receiver left on the market, but it?s believed Edwards is still rehabbing from the knee surgery that forced the 49ers to give up on him in December. Edwards is 29 years old. He can separate from defensive backs with the best of ?em when healthy and is an underrated blocker, but untimely drops and off-field concerns have tarnished his image as an NFL player.

When John Kasich ran for governor, he floated the idea of gradually eliminating the state income tax. Even normally tax-averse people questioned whether it?s feasible (yours truly was not among them).
Well, it?s just a bit more feasible than it was thanks to the exciting prospect of Ohio becoming a major fossil fuels producer ? if Ohio gets its tax structure in this area right. That doesn?t seem possible as long as the opposition to any kind of restructuring which involves raising a tax ? even if there are offsetting or greater reductions elsewhere ? holds sway, as is apparently the case at the moment.
The following is part of an email I sent to a gentleman in a Tea Party organization who is opposing Kasich?s plan to increase mineral severance taxes to a level comparable but still below other states, and to offset any additional tax receipts with income tax cuts:
? (you are) working against what appears to be a very sensible plan by Gov. Kasich to increase resource severance taxes to a level somewhat below other states in return for desperately needed income tax reductions.
I COMPLETELY don?t get it, and the arguments I?ve seen against what Kasich wants aren?t compelling at all. Got any new ones?
Your statement in a recent email that ?Right now the Governor wants to raise taxes without committing to offsetting reductions in personal income tax? is directly denied by the Kasich admin, which states in its two-page ?key points? document that it is ?making sure tax changes are revenue neutral.? You need to prove that they?re not telling the truth before convincing me that they?re not committed to what they say they?re committed to. What about ?All new revenue from oil companies is used to cut income taxes? don?t you understand?
If anything, I would suggest that the guy who helped lead the nation to its last balanced budget and real national annual surplus deserves better than dismissive doubts about his intent to keep his word ?
If the argument is ?we want bigger income tax cuts than additional revenues raised, I would get that. But that?s not what I?m seeing. What I?m seeing is ?Don?t raise any kind of tax ever, no matter how much you cut others.?
Here is the full text of Team Kasich?s ?Key Points? and ?Myths vs. Facts? document:
The Income Tax Cut Key Points
Ohio?s income taxes are too high and must be lowered to create jobs. We need to lower income taxes in order to create a jobs-friendly climate in Ohio.
According to the Tax Foundation, Ohio?s combined state and local income tax burden is among the highest in the nation?in nearly the top third.
Ohio?s combined state and local income tax burden per capita is among the highest also?in the top quarter.
Lowering income taxes helps small businesses create jobs. Small businesses hire half of Ohio?s private sector workforce and 75 percent of small businesses pay all their taxes through the income tax, not the business tax. Therefore, lowering income taxes frees up money for small businesses to invest back into their businesses so they can succeed and expand.
All new revenue from oil companies is used to cut income taxes. None of the new revenue from oil companies will go to government. It will all go to taxpayers.
$1 Billion by 2016: Between 2012 and 2016 Ohio taxpayers could see up to $1 billion in cumulative tax cuts.
$500 million annually: When we hit peak production, Ohio taxpayers could see $500 million in tax cuts every year. That?s approximately a 5 percent income tax cut.
Ohio?s tax system for oil companies is completely outdated. Oil companies? taxes are currently two- tenths of one percent?20 cents?on a $107 barrel of oil. They?re so low because Ohio has never been a major oil producer and our 40-year-old oil company tax never envisioned the explosion in oil and gas production we?re seeing now.
Oil companies will take in a total of up to $53 billion by 2016: Between 2012 and 2016 it?s estimated that oil companies? cumulative gross income could be between $45 and $53 billion?just on Ohio oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids.
Taxes are eliminated for small gas producers: Almost all of Ohio?s small, conventional natural gas producers (90 percent or 44,000 wells) will have all of their severance taxes eliminated altogether.
There?s no change for conventional oil producers: Small, conventional oil producers would see no change in taxes?they?d stay at the current, low 20 cents-per-barrel tax.
Oil companies can break even first, then pay the new standard rate: Horizontal wells get up to two- years at the initial low 1.5 percent rate to break even before the standard 4 percent rate kicks in.
Even Ohio?s new rates will be lower than other states, preserving our competitive edge.?Others state with shale formations or new oil industries?West Virginia, Texas and North Dakota?will all still have higher severance tax rates than Ohio. Though Pennsylvania has no severance tax, it does have a state impact fee, but it lacks Ohio?s large expected amounts of high-value natural gas liquids.
Who deserves low taxes: Ohioans or out-of-state oil companies? The question isn?t whether or not there will be low taxes. We have low taxes right now, but they only benefit the out-of-state oil companies that ship those benefits out-of-state to their out-of-state investors and shareholders. It?s better for Ohio if those benefits remain in Ohio to benefit Ohioans, who will spend that money in Ohio and help rev-up Ohio?s economy.
Bottom Line: Who should have low taxes, out-of-state oil companies or Ohioans?
MYTH v. FACT
1. Myth: Raising severance taxes will raise prices for consumers and for gasoline. FACT: This is a misconception. Like any other business, oil companies pass on their costs of doing business?including the cost of taxes?to whomever buys their products. However, because oil companies will ship most of their products out of Ohio to users around the nation and even around the world, their costs of doing business are shipped out of state also, to be spread out and diluted over a wide, wide range. This is why Texas and Alaska?which have higher severance taxes than Ohio?have very low in-state tax burdens on their residents: the cost of their high severance taxes are passed on and diluted across a range of out-of-state interests instead of being paid for by Texas and Alaska residents. In fact, neither Texas nor Alaska has any income tax at all.
2. MYTH: Raising taxes will hurt the industry?s ability to grow in Ohio. FACT: That?s just not true. Ohio?s taxes on oil companies will be lower than other competing states with new oil industries. Moreover, oil companies have announced $1.4 billion in new investments in just the last month. In fact, Chesapeake announced a $900 million investment on Tuesday, March 13, after the governor?s income tax cut plan was already widely known. The amount of money the oil companies stand to make in Ohio, and our comparatively low taxes, make our state a very attractive place to do business.
3. MYTH: It?s unfair to cut taxes on the backs of a single industry. FACT: Actually, it?s unfair for any single industry to enjoy disproportionately low taxes, as does the oil industry in Ohio today. We should always seek to make taxes both low and fair. Neither Texas nor Alaska has an income tax thanks to their high severance taxes. The oil industry thrives in both states.
4. MYTH: Why do we want to raise taxes on an industry before we even know if it will be successful? FACT: We agree, which is one reason why we didn?t do what Pennsylvania did and we didn?t impose a state impact fee on the industry. Oil companies will only pay taxes on what they produce and sell. If there?s no oil, then they won?t pay anything.
5. MYTH: New severance tax revenue should go to fund government, not income tax cuts. FACT: Ohio governments don?t have revenue problems, they have spending problems. Instead of seeking new revenue streams to support high costs, state and local government should be working to find innovative ways to reduce costs so they can reduce taxes and become more jobs friendly.
6. MYTH: Isn?t it anti-Republican to raise taxes on businesses? FACT: Cutting taxes on small businesses is classic, pro-growth economic policy. Making sure tax changes are revenue neutral and don?t go to government is classic, conservative fiscal policy. Cutting taxes for Ohioans instead of giving the benefits of low taxes to out-of-state oil companies who will ship those benefits out-of-state isn?t conservative or liberal, Republican or Democrat, it?s pro-Ohio.

When selecting contact lenses, it is important that you educate yourself in regard to the options that you have available so that your eyes are protected and you can score the best deals. Several locations, online and off-line, offer contact lenses in many different styles. You just have to know where to look. Hopefully, by the end of this article, you\?ll know exactly what type of contact lenses that you need to get.
To improve your expression take a crack at glow in the dark colored contacts. So many actresses and every day people make use of them. They are my personal much loved secret.
There are many deals that you will be able to find for contact lenses, however, you will have to do a little bit of research to find the lowest prices. Companies that sell contact lenses often compete against one another, changing their prices on different ones, but not others. That\?s why you should always do comparison shopping for what you\?re looking for, whether you\?re shopping online or at an optical store. Both Internet and brick and mortar stores offer rebates ? these can literally save you hundreds of dollars on your contact lenses. There is almost always someone with a lower price, which means you should be looking outlet stores and optical stores for deals that they may have each and every month.
There are now several types of contact lenses made especially for people with particular problems with their eyes. If you have astigmatism, for example, your eye doctor may recommend toric lenses, which are designed to fit your eyes in a way that will correct this type of vision problem. You can find toric lenses that are either soft or hard. More expensive than regular contacts, toric lenses must be specifically created to fit your eyes only. Many people suffer from a condition called presbyopia, which prevents you from seeing objects that are close by. A specific kind of lens called monovision can help with this problem. It is a clear sign that you have presbyopia if small print is hard for you to read. One eye will get a distance lens, and the other eye a near lens; this is how monovision lenses are made and how they can help correct your issue.
Lots of people prefer contacts for their convenience and because they are a way to better your vision, although they can also let you have a different eye color or at least give you that appearance. In truth, even people who have 20/20 vision decide to wear contacts for this reason. There are several different colors of contacts that you can opt from.
If you would rather brighten than change the color of your eyes, than enhancement tint color contact lenses are an option. You can fully transform the color of your eyes, if you choose opaque tint color contacts. This is often done by people with dark color eyes who want blue or green eyes. Although your vision may be excellent, an eye exam is still necessary, because you need to be fitted right to the contacts.
Because many people want to change their eye color, there are now various companies selling non prescription contacts that are made strictly for fashion purposes. Some people say that this is actually dangerous and should be avoided. There are many difficulties with using non-prescription lenses, some of which can actually cause damage to your eyes if used. If the lens isn\?t properly fitted, it may not only be uncomfortable, but your eyes can become infected. Not only that, but wearing such lenses could impair your vision, making it dangerous to drive or perform other basic tasks. Your lenses simply need to fit. If you don\?t do this, you risk damaging your eyes. This can be averted by having a real eye exam and getting your contacts from an optometrist.
Do you buy your contacts on the Internet? If you do, there are some things you need to consider. What many people don\?t realize is that there\?s nothing inherently more dangerous about making a credit card purchase online than in person. If you are able to determine if the online company has a good reputation, and that they are using some form of encryption for your transaction, then you are probably okay. Look for an SSL that indicates that all financial transactions are secure. Another thing to look for is that the company has a thorough support system in place. Companies that have legitimate support desks will give you their phone number and e-mail on the website.
No matter what type of vision correction you need, there is a type of contact lens that\?s ideal for you. Always consider how comfortable your eyes feel when you are wearing contact lenses. Your vision should also greatly improve. You also may have to do some comparison shopping to find the best prices. If contact lenses are going to be a regular part of your life, you might as well find ones that are perfect for you.
LONDON (AP) - Fernando Torres ended a 26-game goal drought as Chelsea reached the FA Cup semifinals on Sunday, and Liverpool ensured a second trip to Wembley Stadium this season on a weekend overshadowed by concern over critically ill Bolton player Fabrice Muamba.
Torres scored twice in a 5-2 win over Leicester and Chelsea will face the winner of the Tottenham-Bolton quarterfinal, abandoned on Saturday after Muamba went into cardiac arrest on the field. The Bolton midfielder remained in critical condition in intensive care.
After Gary Cahill opened the scoring for Chelsea, the defender raised his jersey to reveal a "Pray 4 Muamba" T-shirt in tribute to his former Bolton teammate.
"It was a very difficult day for him and the whole football community, all our thoughts are with Fabrice," Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo said.
Liverpool, which won the League Cup last month, beat Stoke 2-1 to secure a potential semifinal derby if Everton can overcome Sunderland in a replay.
In the Premier League, Manchester United (22-3-4) won 5-0 at last-place Wolverhampton (5-17-7) to move four points head of Manchester City (21-4-3). United also cut City's goal-difference advantage to three.
At Stamford Bridge, Torres scored off Raul Meireles' pass in the 67th minute for a 3-0 lead, his first goal in 25 hours, 41 minutes of action since scoring twice against Genk in the Champions League on Oct. 19.
He added a near-post header in the 85th for his sixth goal of the season and just his seventh in 52 appearances for Chelsea, which acquired him from Liverpool in January 2011 for 50 million pounds (then $80 million). His scoreless streak included 24 matches for Chelsea and two for Spain.
Chelsea has won four straight since Roberto Di Matteo took over as interim manager after Andre Villas-Boas was fired.
Newcastle strengthened its grip on sixth place with a 1-0 victory over Norwich, with Papiss Demba Cisse scoring in the 11th minute for the hosts.
---
MADRID (AP) - Santi Cazorla scored on a spectacular free kick that beat goalkeeper Iker Casillas in the second minute of stoppage time, giving Malaga a 1-1 tie at Real Madrid on Sunday that cut the host's Spanish league lead over second-place Barcelona to eight points.
Karim Benzema marked his first start back from a leg injury with a goal on a 35th-minute header off a cross from Cristiano Ronaldo. But Real Madrid's eight-game league winning streak ended along with Ronaldo's streak of scoring in seven straight matches overall.
With 11 games left, Real Madrid (23-2-2) has 71 points to 63 for Barcelona (19-2-6), the three-time defending league champion.
---
ATHENS, Greece (AP) - The Greek league game between leader Olympiakos and Panathinaikos was abandoned with eight minutes to go because of escalating clashes between fans and the police.
Police announced that 57 people had been detained and a further 20 arrested, while nine police officers were injured, two of them seriously.
"We dedicated several thousand personnel to policing the game and we faced, beginning two hours before the game started, escalating attacks," police spokesman Athanassios Kokalakis said.
Olympiakos (18-2-4), four points ahead of Panathinaikos (17-3-4), was leading 1-0 on Djamel Abdoun's 51st-minute goal.
No Olympiakos fans attended the game at Olympic Stadium in accordance with a league policy not to allow visiting fans due to fears of violence.
---
COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - American defender Clarence Goodson scored the tiebreaking goal on a header in the 75th minute, giving Brondby a 2-1 win over Nordsjaelland in the Danish league.
It was the second goal of the season for Goodson, who also scored against Copenhagen on Nov. 20.
---
GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) - Kilmarnock won the Scottish League Cup for the first time by beating Celtic 1-0 at Hampden Park, a game marred by the death of a player's father.
Substitute Dieter van Tornhout scored on a header from Lee Johnson's cross in the 84th minute, ending Celtic's unbeaten streak at 26 matches.
The father of Kilmarnock midfielder Liam Kelly suffered a suspected heart attack just after the final whistle. The Scotland under-21 national team player headed to a hospital, and police announced Jack Kelly died 50 minutes later.
---
ROME (AP) - Diego Milito failed to convert a penalty kick as Inter Milan was held to a 0-0 tie at home by Atalanta.
Goalkeeper Andrea Consigli blocked Milito's weak spot kick in the 23rd minute. He then also stopped a dangerous header from Walter Samuel on the ensuing corner kick, and Inter didn't come close again.
It was the fifth consecutive home league match Inter failed to win, and it followed a halftime locker from speed by club president Massimo Moratti. On Tuesday, Inter was eliminated from the Champions League by Marseille.
Third-place Lazio struggled in a 1-0 loss at Catania, which won on a volley by former Juventus defender Nicola Legrottaglie in the 80th.
---
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) - Schalke came from behind to win 4-1 at Kaiserslautern in the Bundesliga and stay in the chase for a place in next season's Champions League.
Last-place Kaiserslautern is winless in 16 matches is three points behind Hertha Berlin and six points from safety.
Hannover, like Schalke a quarterfinalist in the Europa League, beat Cologne 4-1 in Sunday's other match after Mame Diouf came off the bench to score twice.
Schalke remained fourth, one point behind Borussia Moenchengladbach. Hannover climbed one place past Stuttgart to seventh.
---
PARIS (AP) - Eden Hazard scored his 12th league goal and set up two more from corner kicks as Lille routed Valenciennes 4-0 to strengthen its hold on third place in the French league.
Lille is seven points behind second-place Montpellier and nine behind French leader Paris Saint-Germain, but has a three-point cushion over fourth-place Toulouse.
Toulouse beat Rennes 1-0 with an own goal from defender Romain Danze to climb to fourth place, while Sochaux moved from last to 19th by beating Nice 2-0.

In most instances, pleural disease is not considered fatal but it can cause diminished lung function and may confirm that a person has sustained significant asbestos exposure. Those diagnosed with pleural conditions are generally considered to be at a higher risk for developing the more severe pleural mesothelioma.
Pleural mesothelioma originates in the pleura but can quickly spread to the outer chest wall, abdomen, and heart. Pleural mesothelioma is typically fatal within 1 year of diagnosis. However, understanding and recognizing key risk factors, like asbestos exposure, will typically lead to early detection of the cancer. Those who are fortunate to receive an early diagnosis are likely to be more eligible for life-sustaining treatments such as surgical resection of the cancer. This type of treatment can extend a patient?s life years beyond that of a typical mesothelioma patient.
While there is no cure for pleural mesothelioma, treatment options do exist for the cancer. There are ways for patients to manage the disease through tumor management including traditional radiation and chemotherapy methods, which can ease symptoms of the disease and make a patient more comfortable. In patients where a diagnosis is made of early stage disease, mesothelioma surgery can extend the survival rate far beyond previous levels in untreated disease.
Treatment and Tumor Management
Nearly all patients diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma are able to receive some form of treatment for their illness. While there is currently no cure for mesothelioma, patients have been able to extend initial prognosis through advanced mesothelioma treatment regimens currently being developed at clinics and cancer centers across the United States.
Surgery
Surgical resection is difficult in pleural mesothelioma patients when the disease is diagnosed in later stages because at that time the tumor has typically metastasized to other areas of the body like the abdominal cavity and lymph nodes. However, in early stage diagnoses, surgery can absolutely be utilized to slow the advance of mesothelioma disease.
Common surgical procedures utilized in the management of malignant mesothelioma are pneumonectomy and extrapleural pneumonectomy. Pneumonectomy is a general procedure utilized not only in patients of malignant mesothelioma, but also for those battling lung cancers or related lung conditions. Pleurectomy involves the removal of a either a portion of or the entire affected lung in patients. Extrapleural pneumonectomy is a more comprehensive procedure that is more tailored to mesothelioma patients and involves the removal of the entire affected lung, the pleura, the diaphragm, and the pericardium, which is the mesothelial lining that surrounds the heart cavity.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is likely the most prevalent treatment utilized by patients of malignant pleural mesothelioma. While several different chemotherapy drugs have been utilized to varying degrees of effectiveness for the management of malignant pleural mesothelioma, only one has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a prescribed therapy for the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma. A combination of Alimta(Pemetrexed) and Cisplatin is currently the only drug combination in approved status. However, several other clinical trials are currently active attempting to determine the effectiveness of other drugs including Gemcitabine, Navelbine, and Onconase.
Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy has been utilized in the treatment of many types of cancer and pleural mesothelioma is no different. Often, radiation is not able to manage cancer by itself so it is combined with either surgery, chemotherapy, or both to augment the treatment plan as a whole. Radiation therapy for pleural mesothelioma utilizes external beam radiation to mutate tumor cells within the body and slow their growth and spread.
Alternative and Complementary Therapies
A growing school in cancer care involves integrative approaches to the treatment of cancer. Integrative oncology utilizes not only the conventional therapies discussed above, but also untraditional therapies such as acupuncture, massage, and reflexology to assist the patient in managing pain, anxiety, and restlessness. Patients battling pleural mesothelioma have effectively utilized alternative therapies like these to increase the effectiveness of their treatment program overall. Generally, patients who are able to withstand the difficult side-effects of more potent chemotherapy and radiation treatments will be best able to extend their prognosis. Patients of pleural mesothelioma who have utilized alternative therapies have been able to do just that. However, most of these therapies are preferential and will depend on the health of the patient as to whether or not they will be able to engage in them. As with any treatment, patients should seek the consultation of their oncologist or cancer specialist before engaging in any alternative therapy.
What Causes Pleural Mesothelioma?
Pleural mesothelioma is known only be caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a naturally occurring and microscopic mineral that was used for hundreds of years in a number of different industrial compounds. Asbestos fibers are extremely durable, but also extremely difficult to expel from the body once introduced to the internal tissue.
Upon inhalation, asbestos fibers will lodge on the outer layers of the lung tissue and within the pleura, a thin membrane of mesothelial cells which lines the chest cavity. This lining allows for the free movement of the body?s internal body structures because it provides a special lubrication to the surface of these structures. The pleura, like other mesothelial membranes, is a delicate structure and microscopic asbestos fibers can cause pleural plaques to form on its surface. Pleural plaques may eventually develop into pleural mesothelioma tumor cells. Generally, it takes many years between asbestos exposure and the development of adverse health complications, as the fibers will slowly irritate and inflame the internal tissue over time until symptoms appear.
Many of those exposed to asbestos have successfully received compensation from asbestos product manufacturers for injuries and illnesses such as pleural mesothelioma. If you believe you were wrongfully exposed to asbestos and have developed an asbestos-related health complication, we urge you to complete the brief form on this page. We?ll rush you a complimentary mesothelioma and asbestos exposure information packet detailing advancements in the treatment of pleural mesothelioma, top doctors and cancer centers, and mesothelioma attorney options you may have.
Don?t Let Time Get in the Way!
Don?t let time prevent you from taking legal action if you have been diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma as a result of asbestos exposure. Every state establishes set timeframes for filing lawsuits for an asbestos related injury. These timeframes are also known as the state statutes of limitation. The deadlines established in the statutes are fixed so it is important to consult with a legal professional soon after the onset of an asbestos related illness to determine what, if any action may be appropriate.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Barack Obama likes to talk about his kids. What parent doesn't?
But Obama isn't just another dad shooting the breeze about his kids' antics in last night's soccer game. He's the president, and he brings up his daughters to explain his thinking on all sorts of combustible national issues.
He's cited Sasha and Malia, now 10 and 13, in discussing everything from the rescue of an American aid worker from Somali pirates to the touchy subject of public access to emergency contraception. His daughters also are prominent in a family photo being used by his re-election campaign.
Most recently, Obama brought up his daughters when asked about conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh's reference to college student Sandra Fluke as a "slut" after she testified that birth control should be covered by insurance.
Obama said at a news conference that he'd called Fluke after Limbaugh made his comments "because I thought about Malia and Sasha, and one of the things I want them to do as they get older is to engage in issues they care about, even ones I may not agree with them on. I want them to be able to speak their mind in a civil and thoughtful way, and I don't want them attacked or called horrible names because they're good citizens."
Invoking his daughters is a way for Obama to bring big issues down to human scale, in a disarming way. It also is a reminder to Americans of the president's photogenic family ? a priceless political asset in an election year.
The Obamas can be fiercely protective of their daughters' privacy in some ways ? complaining if the girls are photographed while out on their own, for example ? but they've been more than willing to keep bringing them up in the national conversation. And to keep them in the minds of voters as the general election approaches.
A few months ago, Obama brought up the girls in talking about the government's decision to keep the Plan B morning-after pill available only to those 17 or older, rather than allowing it to be openly sold on drugstore shelves.
"As the father of two daughters, I think it is important for us to make sure that we apply some common sense to various rules when it comes to over-the-counter medicine," Obama said. He went on to say the drug shouldn't be available for sale to young girls, "and I think most parents would probably feel the same way."
In January, when an American aid worker was rescued from Somali pirates by Navy SEALs, Obama thought aloud about what her father had gone through, and about his own daughters.
"I cannot imagine what he went through ? given Malia and Sasha ? and for him to be able to stay strong," the president said.
First lady Michelle Obama, for her part, frequently brings up her daughters while talking about her campaign against childhood obesity. She often tells about how the girls were starting to get off-track before the family's pediatrician gave her a wake-up call.
On a recent four-state tour to promote her "Let's Move" campaign, Mrs. Obama blended stories about her own family with policy pronouncements, offering tips on how she gets her girls to eat healthy snacks and use good manners at the dinner table. And she probably got a lot of knowing nods from parents after she related that her daughters aren't all that interested in the White House garden "because anything I do they're not interested in."
Douglas Wead, a former aide to President George H.W. Bush who has written a book about presidential families, said it's no surprise ? and no coincidence ? that the Obamas want to showcase "a marriage that functions well and a relationship with children that functions well."
"Everything is calculated at that level," he said, adding that he doesn't blame the Obamas for "showing off a little."
But Wead cautioned that it can be risky for a president to invoke his children when debating weighty policy matters.
"Jimmy Carter got his hand slapped when he did that," Wead reminded.
In his 1980 re-election campaign, Carter brought up his 13-year-old daughter, Amy, during a presidential debate.
"I had a discussion with my daughter, Amy, the other day, before I came here, to ask her what the most important issue was," Carter said. "She said she thought nuclear weaponry ? and the control of nuclear arms. This is a formidable force."
Carter's rival, Republican Ronald Reagan, mocked the answer at a later campaign rally, saying: "I remember when Patty and Ron were little kids, we used to talk about nuclear power."
Obama's on safer footing when he jokes about his daughters to puncture the formality of an event and put people at ease.
When the president visited a Master Lock factory in Milwaukee last month to discuss American manufacturing, he got a laugh from the workers when he told them: "As I was looking at some of the really industrial-size locks, I was thinking about the fact that I am a father of two girls who are soon going to be in high school and that it might come in handy to have these super locks. For now, I'm just counting on the fact that when they go to school there are men with guns with them."
In a similar vein, he told a National Prayer Breakfast last year that he has prayed, "Lord, give me patience as I watch Malia go to her first dance, where there will be boys. Lord, let her skirt get longer as she travels to that place."
The crowd loved it.
But you can imagine Malia groaning, and saying "Oh, Dad."
