Son of China's Bo Xilai defends his father

BOSTON (Reuters) - The Harvard-educated son of disgraced Chinese political leader Bo Xilai defended his father against charges of taking bribes and having improper sexual relationships, saying he believed in his father's good character.

"Personally, it is hard for me to believe the allegations that were announced against my father, because they contradict everything I have come to know about him throughout my life," Bo Guagua said in a statement posted on the microblog site Tumblr.

"Although the policies my father enacted are open to debate, the father I know is upright in his beliefs and devoted to duty," he added. Bo confirmed the statement, posted on Saturday, with Reuters.

Since graduating from Harvard University in May with a master's degree in public policy, Guagua, 24, has kept a low profile, in contrast to reports earlier this year of a playboy lifestyle in the United States that created a firestorm on the Internet back in China.

The younger Bo's statement came a day after China's ruling Communist Party accused his father of abusing his power, taking huge bribes and other crimes.

Bo will be handed over for criminal investigation, state media reported on the latest phase in a scandal of murder and cover-ups that has shaken China's leadership. Bo had been seen as a strong contender to become a member of the powerful Standing Committee of the Chinese Communist Party Political Bureau later this year.

Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, and his former police chief, Wang Lijun, have both been jailed over the scandal stemming from the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood in the southwestern city of Chongqing, where Bo was Communist Party chief.

At her trial on August 9, Gu admitted to poisoning Heywood last November.

Gu and Heywood got into a dispute over a soured real estate deal, according to the official Xinhua news agency. Gu said she believed Heywood threatened Guagua's personal safety.

"I suffered a mental breakdown after learning that my son was in jeopardy," Gu said, according to official accounts.

Last week's government statement carried by Xinhua said that in the murder scandal, Bo "abused his powers of office, committed serious errors and bears a major responsibility".

Bo has been expelled from the party as well as the elite decision-making Politburo and Central Committee.

ONLY CHILD

Guagua is the only child of Bo and Gu. Though his friends and acquaintances say he would like to challenge the negative perception of his parents more forcefully, Guagua has said very little publicly because he fears it could only make matters worse.

"He has always taught me to be my own person and to have concern for causes greater than ourselves," Guagua said in his statement. "I have tried to follow his advice. At this point, I expect the legal process to follow its normal course, and I will await the result."

This past summer Guagua traveled along the Maine coast and visited Westchester County in New York, according to friends and acquaintances. He has been somewhat isolated, though, as he takes stock of his uncertain future. Friends said Guagua has had little or no communication with his mother since March, shortly before she was accused of murder. Communication with his father has been intermittent at best, they said.

Several friends and acquaintances interviewed said they did not want their names used because they fear fallout from being associated with the biggest scandal in Chinese politics in more than two decades.

"The whole thing is just radioactive," one of Guagua's friends told Reuters. "He's under tremendous pressure."

In private, Guagua, who declined to comment for this story, has told friends his father did not flirt with the extremism exhibited by Mao Zedong during China's 1966-76 Cultural Revolution.

According to Guagua's accounts to friends, Bo Xilai encouraged the singing of so-called red songs, but only as a means to promote unity and morality in Chongqing, a sprawling municipal district of about 30 million people that is wracked with street crime and other forms of corruption.

Bo Xilai promoted the reading of Maoist poems, but he also referenced the works of Thomas Jefferson, friends said, relating conversations with Guagua.

In August, Guagua bristled at the suggestion that his father may have given him documents as a sort of insurance policy against his enemies in the Communist Party.

"My father has no need for any such things because he has always been aboveboard, regardless of how people who don't know him can speculate," he said in an email exchange with Reuters.

Greater Noida-Ghaziabad link to be ready soon - Real Estate India

??|?? September 30, 2012 ?? 09:16am ??|Contributed by manoja

GREATER NOIDA: Work on completing the 22km link road between Greater Noida?s Zeta sector and NH24 is likely to start next week as Greater Noida Authority (GNA) and Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) claim to have cleared the remaining encroachments on the way. A 1.5km portion of the alignment has been pending for almost nine years now due to various reasons.

GDA on Friday said it would relocate the 50-odd farmer families who have their residential plots on the road alignment to land provided by GNA in Chipiyana village, Greater Noida, in the next 10 days. GNA had allotted 7.71 acres to GDA in July for rehabilitating the affected families.

The 130m wide signal-free road, when completed, will cut down travel time between Greater Noida and Ghaziabad to just 20 minutes. The road begins at the New Holland factory in Greater Noida and meets NH24 at the Vijay Nagar bypass in Ghaziabad. It will be extended later to the Meerut highway.

GNA CEO Rama Raman told TOI that most of the 22km road is ready. However, work could not start on the 1.5km stretch as the abadi land of Bahrampur Akbarpur and Chak Birampur villages lay on it. While GNA managed to settle the issue with the villagers, GDA did not have land to relocate them.

Wall St Week Ahead: Stock bulls eye Spain, Bernanke and jobs

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street will open October with a busy week, highlighted by low expectations for global manufacturing data and the U.S. jobs report, but that could set the stage for positive surprises that help lift the market.

The S&P 500 finished its third positive quarter in the last four on Friday, despite suffering its largest weekly percentage decline since June. For the past three months, the S&P 500 gained 5.9 percent - its best third quarter since 2010. In contrast, the index was down 1.3 percent for the week.

The benchmark S&P 500 earlier this month reached its highest level since late 2007. Yet uncertainty remains over whether stocks can hold their gains against the headwinds of a struggling economy. That explains, in part, the retreat over the last several days.

The S&P 500 hit a high of 1,474.51 in mid-September before pulling back by a bit more than 2 percent. A run at 1,500 seems possible, but the flurry of economic and world events ahead probably will prevent a major advance in the coming week.

Bulls are betting this week's Spanish budget proposals will be a preamble to a bailout request by Mariano Rajoy's government. The move would be seen as a first step to get the finances of the euro zone's fourth-largest economy in order and would clear some of the market uncertainty regarding the euro zone crisis.

Monetary policy is also on the list of market catalysts next week. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is scheduled to speak on Monday and the minutes of the latest FOMC meeting are set for release later in the week. The week's agenda includes meetings of the European Central Bank, the Bank of England and the Bank of Japan.

"I think we could see a rebound next week if we get some of the stars aligning and have Spain ask for a bailout, the ECB announcing favorable terms for that bailout, and if we see the Bank of Japan announce further monetary intervention," said Brian Jacobsen, chief portfolio strategist at Wells Fargo Funds Management in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.

"If Spain and the ECB don't deliver, we could set ourselves up for a further lateral move in the markets. A negative would be if Rajoy flat-out denies that they need a bailout."

The ECB and BOJ are set to meet on Thursday, with the Bank of Japan's meeting extending until Friday.

FACTORIES, JOBS AND THE DEBATES

Chinese factory and business conditions data will kick off a numbers-heavy calendar for markets. Manufacturing PMI, due on Monday, is expected to show a second straight month of contraction.

A snapshot of U.S. manufacturing activity will be provided on Monday when the Institute for Supply Management releases its September index. The September ISM reading is expected to show another month of contraction, but at a slightly slower pace than in August. On Wednesday, the ISM will release its U.S. services-sector Purchasing Managers' Index, which could show a slight deceleration in the pace of growth in the non-manufacturing sector.

"We have Chinese economic data over the weekend, and we'll see how markets react on Monday," said Wasif Latif, vice president of equity investments at San Antonio, Texas-based USAA Investment Management.

"It seems like the market is bracing for bad numbers, meaning if they're not as bad, it could be market-positive," Latif said.

Non-farm payrolls for September, due on Friday, are seen up 115,000, while the U.S. unemployment rate is seen ticking up 0.1 percent from August to 8.2 percent in September.

The jobs data will come on the heels of the first of three U.S. presidential debates, scheduled for Wednesday night. Recent poll numbers point to a strengthening lead by President Barack Obama, but a weak payrolls reading could give some hope to Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

"If Romney doesn't turn the ship with a very strong (debate)performance, the president is going to win," said Jack de Gan, chief investment officer at Harbor Advisory Corp in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

He said the trend in the polls has taken away some of the market uncertainty regarding the presidential election. He added that an ECB- or Spain-related headline out of Europe on Thursday could overcome almost anything that would happen Wednesday night during the debate.

"I think the market is coming to terms with the fact the president is ahead, and unless something significant changes, (he) will prevail."

Bahrain company leads takeover of Leeds

By MICHAEL CASEY

AP Sports Write

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:42 a.m. ET Sept. 27, 2012

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -A Bahrain investment firm has signed an agreement to oversee the takeover of fallen English football club Leeds.

GFH Capital Limited, a 100 percent subsidiary of Gulf Finance House, said on Thursday it signed an exclusive agreement to "lead and arrange" the acquisition of Leeds.

The club has fallen on hard times since almost collapsing in 2001 after overspending to reach the Champions League semifinals. Once a powerhouse in the topflight, the club is 12th in the second-tier League Championship.

GFH did not provide any further details about its plans. It was unclear if GFH was purchasing the club for itself or on behalf of investors.

GFH is a Bahrain-based investment bank that operates in accordance with Islamic financial principles, which generally prohibit the charging of interest and bar investments that run contrary to the faith. Most of its ownership is traded on regional stock exchanges, though a number of public and private Gulf-based investors also own stakes in the company.

Like many Gulf firms that borrowed heavily as they expanded last decade, GFH faced financial challenges when the global financial crisis rocked the region. It completed the process of reworking the terms of a $45 million debt in July.

Gulf investors have increasingly put their money into European football clubs, with billions of dollars being poured into Manchester City by its Abu Dhabi-based owner Sheik Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and most recently the takeover of Paris Saint-Germain by a Qatari government-linked investment fund.

However, not all bids have gone well.

Bahrain-based investment firm Western Gulf Advisory made a bid for Blackburn before dropping out of contention while a bid by Dubai investors to buy Spanish club Getafe unraveled after the checks received by the club failed to clear. Several people claiming to represent the Dubai investors have been arrested.

Apple sells over 5 million of its iPhone 5 on first weekend

Featured

1 day

The iPhone 5 started shipping (and hitting store shelves) on Friday, Sept. 21. According to Apple, the company has sold more than?five million of the new iPhone model in the three days since its debut.

?We are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible," Apple CEO?Tim Cook said?in a press release from the Cupertino-based company. "While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone?s patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone."

Folks who try to order an iPhone 5 at this point will find that the device won't ship for three to four weeks, but based on calls to a random selection of Apple's own stores as well as several carriers' retail locations, there still appears to be a small amount of stock in the brick-and-mortar shops. (And as Cook said, stores are regularly receiving additional?shipments of devices.)

If you are in a rush to get an iPhone 5, we suggest that you lace up your boots and pound the pavement. As?Verizon Wireless spokeswoman Brenda Raney points out, you should not only?get to a store early (in hopes of snagging a device from a recent product replenishment), but also strategize as to which store you will visit.

"Select a store away from the center of the city or places where commuters and shoppers congregate," she told NBC News. "A?stand-alone store on the outskirts of town may be a better bet than the one in a mall.

In case you somehow missed all the excitement about the device, let's review the basics about the iPhone 5,?the latest generation of Apple's popular smartphone. In appearance, it is similar to the iPhone 4S, its predecessor, though it has?a 4-inch display (rather than a 3.5-inch display) and is a bit thinner.?The iPhone 5 offers 4G LTE connectivity (meaning users will see faster data speeds), improved battery life, a faster processor, and a lighter body.?

Out of the box,?the new smartphone will run iOS 6, the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system, which means that it will have?an improved version of Siri, a new app called Passbook (which will store boarding passes, discount cards, and similar items), and about 200 other?new features.?

Much to the dismay of many, the new operating system does not offer a Google-powered Maps app, but instead uses Apple's own creation (which is not earning much praise so far).

In better news, the iPhone 5 is considered to be "easier than ever" to repair, much to the relief of those who?live in constant?fear of dropping their iPhones and damaging the devices.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Iran readies domestic Internet, blocks Google

17 hrs.

DUBAI ??Iran plans to switch its citizens onto a domestic Internet network in what officials say is a bid to improve cyber security but which many Iranians fear is the latest way to control their access to the web.

The announcement, made by a government deputy minister on Sunday, came as state television announced Google Inc's search engine and its email service would be blocked "within a few hours".

"Google and Gmail will be filtered throughout the country until further notice," an official identified only by his last name, Khoramabadi, said, without giving further details.

The Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) said Google ban was connected to the anti-Islamic film posted on the company's YouTube site which has caused outrage throughout the Muslim world. There was no official confirmation.

Iran has one of the biggest Internet filters of any country in the world, preventing normal Iranians from accessing countless sites on the official grounds they are offensive or criminal.

But many Iranians believe the block on sites such as Facebook and YouTube is due to their use in anti-government protests after the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahamdinejad in 2009.

Sites expressing views considered anti-government are also routinely blocked.

Iranians commonly overcome the government filter by using virtual private network (VPN) software that makes the computer appear as if it is based in another country.

But officials have long spoken of creating an Iranian Internet system which would be largely isolated from the World Wide Web.

"In recent days, all governmental agencies and offices ... have been connected to the national information network," deputy communications and technology minister Ali Hakim-Javadi was quoted as saying by the Mehr news agency.

The second phase of the plan would be to connect ordinary Iranians to the national network, he said.

According to Iranian media, the domestic system would be fully implemented by March 2013 but it was not clear whether access to the global Internet would be cut once the Iranian system is rolled out.

Even using VPNs, many Iranians suffered serious problems accessing email and social networking sites in February, ahead of parliamentary elections.

The Islamic Republic tightened cyber security after its nuclear program was attacked in 2010 by the Stuxnet computer worm, which caused centrifuges to fail at its main uranium enrichment facility.

Tehran, whose nuclear programme is suspected by the West of being aimed at developing a bomb, accused the United States and Israel of deploying the worm.

Authorities said in April a computer virus was detected inside the control systems of Kharg Island - which handles the vast majority of Iran's crude oil exports - but the terminal remained operational.

Communications and Technology Minister Reza Taqipour said last month Iran needed to develop its own network to ensure the safety of the country's information.

"Control over the Internet should not be in the hands of one or two countries," he said. "Especially on major issues and during crises, one cannot trust this network at all."

Iran threatened in May to take legal action against Google over its decision to drop the term "Persian Gulf" from its Google Maps and leaving the waterway between Iran and the Arabian peninsula nameless.

Many Arab states refer to the sea as the "Arabian Gulf", a term Iran considers unacceptable.

Giants cut their magic number to 4

By JANIE McCAULEY

AP Baseball Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:02 p.m. ET Sept. 20, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Switch-hitter Pablo Sandoval homered from both sides of the plate and the NL West-leading San Francisco Giants reduced their magic number to clinch the division to four by beating the Colorado Rockies 9-2 on Thursday.

Buster Posey also connected for the Giants to back another strong start by Barry Zito (13-8) as San Francisco completed a four-game sweep.

Zito won his fifth straight decision and has done everything to earn himself a spot in the postseason rotation after being left off all three rounds for the 2010 World Series champions.

The second-place Dodgers were set for a night game at Washington, trailing by 9 1/2 games. San Francisco (87-63) moved a season-best 24 games above .500, its best since finishing the 2003 season 39 games over.

Colorado has lost six in a row.

Sandoval connected from both sides for the first time in his career. Batting right-handed, he hit the first pitch he saw from Jorge De La Rosa (0-1) into the left-field stands for a solo homer in the first inning.

Sandoval hit a three-run drive into the elevated right-field arcade in the fourth. It marked his fifth career multihomer game. His last came Sept. 18, 2011, also against the Rockies at Coors Field.

Posey - making an MVP bid and drawing chants of "M-V-P!" - followed Sandoval's fourth-inning shot with his 23rd home run. The Giants homered in consecutive at-bats for the second time this season after departed Nate Schierholtz and Brandon Crawford did so April 11 at Colorado.

Marco Scutaro's fourth-inning single gave him a career-best 175 hits and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. He added an RBI single in the sixth and has hit safely in 42 of 51 games since joining the Giants from the Rockies on July 27.

Zito received more than enough support in the latest impressive start during his comeback year. The Giants won for the ninth straight time in one of his outings - and Zito's 13 victories are his most with the Giants and most since a 16-win season in 2006 for Oakland.

The left-hander, who had been disappointing since receiving a $126 million, seven-year contract ahead of the 2007 season, walked off the mound to yet another standing ovation in the sixth. He raised his right hand and pointed to the sellout crowd of 41,157 in appreciation.

Zito struck out six and walked one in 5 2-3 innings, allowing two runs and a season-high 10 hits. He hasn't lost since Aug. 2 against the Mets.

It was a short day for De La Rosa - but that might have been expected as he came off the 60-day disabled list. The left-hander returned to the mound for the first time since May 24, 2011, when he left an outing with elbow soreness and later underwent Tommy John surgery.

De La Rosa was tagged for five earned runs, six in all, and seven hits in 3 2-3 innings. De La Rosa and Jonathan Herrera each had RBI singles for Colorado.

Rockies slugger Carlos Gonzalez didn't return to the outfield in the bottom of the second after grounding into an inning-ending double play in the first.

He played the entire game Wednesday - with two strikeouts and two groundouts - but was a late scratch Tuesday night with a tight left hamstring. He re-aggravated the leg injury during the game, the team said.

The Rockies were swept in a four-game series in San Francisco for the first time since July 17-20, 2003.

NOTES: Sandoval batted .500 (8 for 16) with seven RBIs and three homers during the series. ... Randy Winn was the last Giants player to hit a home run from both sides of the plate, on Aug. 30, 2008, at Cincinnati. ... Zito is 7-2 vs. the NL West and 12-3 when he pitches a scoreless first inning. ... Giants manager Bruce Bochy planned to reach out to Reds skipper Dusty Baker, hospitalized for an irregular heartbeat. ... The Rockies cleared room on the 40-man roster for De La Rosa by transferring LHP Christian Friedrich to the 60-day DL. ... Angel Pagan's double in the third gave him 56 extra-base hits, most on the Giants. ... The Giants improved to 7-11 in games going for a sweep. ... San Francisco topped its win total of 86 from last year, improving to 13-5 in September.

The Stealth Menu Of Too Many Real Estate Investors ? Hittin' The Ball

baseball hit is like real estate investing success

When investing long term, we can count on one hand and have fingers left over, the folks who aren?t investing for their retirement. Given that virtually axiomatic fact, understanding the depth and breadth of the menu from which you?re making life affecting decisions is beyond crucial. Investing in real estate obviously isn?t as simple as buy low/sell high. The investor?s menu offers more options than most know exist. How?d you like to order off a restaurant?s menu, then find out later the actual menu offered triple the choices you?d perceived? To make things worse, what you missed was their best stuff. This is the reality of far too many long term investors.

I?ve long had a different way of saying ?we don?t know what we don?t know?. I prefer, ?It?s not the questions we have that do us in. It?s the answers to questions we never knew to ask?.?The unknown info need not be impressively sophisticated or even mildly so. It only needs to be unknown to you. Big or small, it?s almost never just one piece of datum. And there?s the rub.

Though many of you have read or heard me talk about Strategic Synergism, it?s important to understand the concept?s potential impact on your end game. I think this story works well as an analogy For years I was a youth baseball coach. Whether it was hitting or pitching, proper mechanics was everything. Here?s an example.

A tall, very strong young man came onto our team late one season. The kid was tall and strong for his age. Yet, he couldn?t translate his size and strength advantages due to a fundamental flaw in his swing. In fact, his swing was literally obstructing his ability to get his bat in the hitting zone on time. No need to get detailed here, but the bottom line is, he wasn?t rotating his hips immediately as his swing commenced. This had a negative synergistic affect. Since his hips remained in a static position, it was virtually impossible for his back foot to pivot while swinging. Also, again due to the recalcitrant hips, his hands were literally slowed down in their frenzied attempt to get the bat to the ball.

The Fix

This is the fun part. Once he trained himself to begin his swing by rotating his hips towards the pitcher, it allowed both his back foot and hands to ?do their things? as well. This resulted in gettin? his bat in the hitting zone WAY faster, with increased bat speed, and in his case, much authority. Besides hittin? pitches he couldn?t touch before, he was now able to hit much faster pitches. There are one or two baseballs he hit with his new swing that still haven?t been found. :)

That anecdote/analogy works from A to Z for real estate investors. You can?t fix what you don?t know is broke. You can?t utilize what you don?t know is on your menu. The difference between one investor?s knowledge and another can appear to be marginal, when in fact it?s often dozens of little factoids that have combined to create a positive juggernaut. The inability of the investor to benefit from their entire menu manifests itself in a few ways.

They miss golden opportunities.

They execute a strategy seriously inappropriate for their circumstances.?

They maintain their status quo when a move or moves would enhance their position in a big way.

Worst though, is when they set their agenda back in such a way it costs them in terms of years lost. Years they can?t get back. Meanwhile, those pesky candles on their birthday cake keep growin? in number.

What so many think of as trivial things, become potential problems as they?re paired with many other ?trivial? things. Together they can easily morph into dangerous, unintended outcomes. Add to this the magnified results of the damage caused due to the stealthy nature of the surprise attack you never saw coming. Synergy works both ways. When used with full knowledge and an appropriate purpose, it can indeed produce magnificent results. When brought into play accidentally and in random combinations, it can be brutally destructive.

In other words, the right swing mechanics are hips, hands, bat. Hit the pitches thrown your way on Purpose, and with full knowledge.

Verizon FiOS customers gain iPad, Android streaming

Michelle Clancy | 07-09-2012

Verizon has given FiOS IPTV subscribers the ability to use its Flex View service to stream hit TV shows from NBC, WB and E! and others, plus thousands of Hollywood titles from all the major studios, to the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, Android devices, and select Samsung connected TVs.?

Working with Motorola Mobility as a key DRM supplier, it has implemented the SecureMedia Encryptonite ONE HLS+ to satisfy studio requirements for anti-piracy and security for multiscreen streaming, in order to bring the service to the table.
Verizon's Flex View lets FiOS customers buy or rent more than 25,000 on-demand titles, including movies and TV shows, and watch them on their TV, PC and mobile device.
Security is a mounting concern for service providers addressing the explosion in multi-screen media consumption. A 2011 Motorola study found that nearly 70% of global respondents were watching TV on other devices, including smartphones, which in the US experienced a five-fold increase in TV viewing over the previous year.
"Now, more than ever, content protection is absolutely necessary to deliver today's entertainment to multiple screens," said Peter Burke, vice president of product management for converged solutions at Motorola Mobility. "Our Medios portfolio is dedicated to helping our service provider partners like Verizon meet consumer demand for multi-screen experiences. SecureMedia? Encryptonite ONE HLS+ is a key component of that portfolio, as the leading solution widely available today that has been internationally approved by Hollywood studios."
Motorola's SecureMedia Encryptonite ONE HLS+ provides a streamlined process for service providers to ingest, transcode and securely deliver live and on-demand content via standard HTTP methods and infrastructure. That lets Verizon offer its subscribers anytime, anywhere access to secure, premium entertainment on multiple devices
Motorola will be showcasing SecureMedia at IBC 2012 in Amsterdam, taking place 7-12 September, on Stand D3, Hall 1.

Clarification of my extra credit ?policy? for Finance 4335

One of my longstanding goals as a professor is to do all that I can to instill curiosity and a love for learning in my students.? Thus I occasionally offer extra credit for learning about important topics.? My bias in selecting extra credit assignments is naturally directed toward topics which intrigue me and have important public policy implications.? The extra credits are not intended to substitute for the quizzes which I give for the purpose of incentivizing students to be well prepared for class.? During the course of the semester, I give a limited number of extra credit assignments, ALL of which Finance 4335 students are encouraged to take advantage of.

To date, I have offered two extra credit opportunities for Finance 4335.? The first extra credit opportunity expired a little over 45 minutes ago.? The second extra credit opportunity will expire this coming Friday @ 5 p.m., so you still take advantage of that opportunity if you want to (the organization that hosted a ?live? stream of the Texas AG?s presentation at a luncheon today has posted a recording of his presentation at http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/25203649).

Former NFL players found to be at greater risk for brain diseases

As the National Football League kicks off a new season, a study appearing in a leading medical journal underscores the long-term costs of the game on those who play it.

A study tracking 3,439 retired players with five or more seasons in the NFL found these athletes four times as likely as other men their age to die of Alzheimer's disease or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Among the league's "speed players" ? those who build up substantial speed before they make a tackle or are brought down by one ? the odds of dying of those causes were even greater.

The heightened risk of death from these neurodegenerative disorders was in sharp contrast to an overall picture of remarkable health among the former players. Compared with men in the general population, the NFL veterans were about half as likely to die at any given age.

The study, published Wednesday by the journal Neurology, is the most extensive survey of former athletes since concern about the long-term consequences of repeated blows to the head has become a major safety issue among NFL players.

The NFL has found itself in a precarious legal position amid claims by former players that they were not properly warned of the dangers of head injuries. The players say the blows to the head have contributed to depression, memory loss and other neurological disorders.

Most recently, a postmortem investigation found that former NFL safety Dave Duerson was suffering advanced neurodegenerative disease at the time of his suicide at the age of 50 in February 2011.

About 3,400 former players have sued the NFL over these claims, according to an analysis by the Associated Press. The NFL has asked the courts to throw out some of these suits on the grounds that it's a matter for collective bargaining.

The league denies withholding information about the dangers of concussions, noting that medical experts are still trying to determine the long-term effects of them.

The authors of the new study ? a team from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, which is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ? cited recent research on chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, a buildup in proteins seen in the autopsied brains of former athletes who played a wide range of contact sports. That research, the authors wrote, "now suggests that CTE may have been the true primary or secondary factor in some of these deaths."

Dr. Ann McKee, a pathologist and co-director of the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at Boston University, called the new research "groundbreaking."

The study "opens new avenues for research and validates our neuropathological findings," said McKee, whose autopsies of 15 former NFL athletes have turned up substantial evidence that repeated brain trauma has detrimental effects. "It raises our concern about the risk of CTE, dementia and ALS and the way these conditions overlap."

McKee, whose brain bank has drawn donations from a growing number of former athletes, added that research into the long-term effects of brain trauma "is an issue not just for football players, but also other sports, the military and accidents involving head trauma."

There is little doubt that the claims by former players has forced the NFL to change some of its rules and procedures. Players who suffer concussion-like symptoms must now be cleared by an independent neurologist before returning to either practice or a game. This process often takes several days before a player can rejoin his team.

The league also moved its kickoffs five yards closer to the opponent's end zone last season in the hope of having more touchbacks ? the ball being downed without contact and placed at the 20-yard line ? to avoid the dangers associated with runbacks, in which players often collide at full speed.

"Well before this study was released, the NFL took significant steps to address head injuries in football, provide medical and financial assistance to our retired players, and raise awareness of the most effective ways to prevent, manage and treat concussions," league spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement.

"The study underscores the continuing need to invest in research, education and advocacy, strengthen and enforce our rules on player safety, and do all we can to make our game safer," the statement said.

To that end, the NFL announced Wednesday a $30-million contribution to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health to support "research on serious medical conditions prominent in athletes and relevant to the general population." It was the largest philanthropic donation ever made by the NFL in its 92-year history to any single organization.

"We hope this grant will help accelerate the medical community's pursuit of pioneering research to enhance the health of athletes past, present and future," said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. "This research will extend beyond the NFL playing field and benefit athletes at all levels and others, including members of our military."

A 2005 study found that compared with former NFL players with fewer than three concussions, those who had sustained three or more showed a fivefold increase in mild cognitive impairment ? a condition that often precedes a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease ? and a threefold increase in significant memory problems.

The new study did not, in fact, find substantial numbers of former players with neurodegenerative disease. Among the 3,439 players the researchers tracked, 1,116 died during the study period. Of those, only 27 were found to have a neurodegenerative disease as an underlying or contributing cause of death.

Teaching Business Ethics: Plagiarism: The 3-word Rule

PLAGIARISM: WHAT IT IS AND HOW TO AVOID IT -- FOR INSTRUCTORS AND STUDENTS

One of the most remarkable things about teaching today is students' ignorance of what constitutes plagiarism. I presume that virtually every high school in the U.S. and around the world simply fails to make this issue abundantly clear. Why it should even need to be mentioned or explained at the college level is a mystery to me. (If you have an explanation, feel free to contact me.)

I don't think I have had an online class where there were not instances of plagiarism.

That said, there ARE SOME REMINDERS THAT ARE IMPORTANT FOR ONLINE CLASSES. The for-profits, especially at the graduate level, make sure that they are at pains to enforce the following rule:

1. ALL quotations from the textbook must be identified as quotations with accurate and complete use of quotation marks and a proper citation.?Quoting from the textbook without using quotation marks is plagiarism. This applies to the discussion board, papers, and any other comments -- anything that is written and presented to the class.

Example:

WRONG (plagiarism in a discussion board post):

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?I think anyone who is not pure himself to attain the realm of

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?purity would be a breach of universal justice.?

RIGHT (proper credit):

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Plato made a good point when he said, "For one who is not

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?pure himself to attain the realm of purity would no doubt

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?be a breach of universal justice" (Emerick and Birch 211).

Although some students (and even some Instructors) may think that the WRONG example cited is an innocent appropriation of the text, this is not the case. It is plagiarism because it meets the definition: "taking anther person's words or ideas as your own" (from Quick Study "Keys to High School Success," page 2, available from quickstudy.com, currently a free download). The post melds words from a quotation from Plato with the poster's own words, creating ambiguity about the authorship of the idea and the words used to express the idea.

The plagiarized post also violates "the 3-word rule" instituted by some colleges.

2. A good rule of thumb for avoiding plagiarism is that whenever you use three or more words in a row from a source it is always best to put the words in quotation marks and show the reader your source through proper citation.

Obviously, it would be a good idea to go over all of the above with a class before grading any posts or papers. Personally, I am not in favor of much flexibility in plagiarism rules. "Forgetting" to use quotation marks is not an excuse when an entire paragraph has obviously been lifted from the text book or another source, or even when a potent phrase is "innocently" lifted from the textbook to make the post more academic in tone. Although I confess to usually letting the first "forgetting" offense go, with a warning and having the student do the post over, I am not really in favor of warnings. Ideally, all students should have passed a preliminary test on plagiarism. The standard punishments for plagiarism are:

First offense: "F" on the assignment.
Second offense: "F" for the course.
Third offense: Dismissal from the school.

Since many schools do not actually enforce these rules, online instructors get a steady stream of professional plagiarizers, much to the detriment of their schools and education world wide.

From the student side, plagiarism is such a simple thing to avoid! You have already read the text, already found the passage that you like and that is appropriate to the context of the question. Go ahead and quote from it! Make sure you punctuate it correctly using MLA or APA format. Next, just add your own two cents, explaining how and why this passage answers the question. Most instructors will give you a good score for that.

San Francisco Personal Injury Attorney On USC Lawsuit

As reported by USA Today, a former USC football player has filed a lawsuit against the university.

In which he alleges that the school is responsible for a heart attack that effectively eliminated his chances of an NFL career. The heart attack he claims was caused by pain killers he was given while playing football for the university.

The player, Armond Armstead, was a defensive lineman for the USC Trojans from 2008 through 2010. While he played for the Trojans Armstead was treated with Toradol, a nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drug, along with other drugs, for a broken foot and a shoulder injury.

In his complaint he alleges the the dosing he was given exceeded the maximum dosage guidelines and contributed to the heart attack that he suffered in 2011.

Armstead did not enter the 2011 NFL Draft but decided the continue playing for USC for his senior season.

Prosecutor subpoenas Sun Valley for audit records - KHQ Right Now

KETCHUM, Idaho (AP) - Officials in the central Idaho resort city of Sun Valley have been issued a subpoena to turn over records used to conduct a forensic audit of the city's finances during fiscal year 2011.

The Idaho Mountain Express reports (http://bit.ly/S5Wjrf ) the subpoena issued by Blaine County Prosecuting Attorney Jim Thomas was received Tuesday by Sun Valley.

The subpoena directs the city to produce documents and computer records at a Sept. 4 hearing in 5th District Court in Hailey.

The city received the audit from an accounting firm on Aug. 24, but has not made it public.

The audit could shed light on lingering questions surrounding alleged financial irregularities, a break-in at a fire station were documents were stolen and files erased, resignations of staff members, and lawsuits.

Police investigate massive maple syrup theft in Canada

ST-LOUIS-DE-BLANDFORD, Quebec (AP) - Police in Quebec were following the scent of something sweet - millions of dollars' worth of maple syrup missing from a large warehouse stocking over $30 million worth of the amber nectar.

The theft puts a cavity-sized dent in Quebec's syrup stock, considered to be a global strategic reserve of the sweet stuff that is often used to replenish markets during disappointing seasons. Quebec produces up to 80 percent of the world's maple syrup.

Quebec Provincial Sgt. Claude Denis said Friday it was too soon to determine the exact quantity or value of the maple syrup stolen from the St. Louis-De-Blandford facility where over 10 million pounds (4.54 million kilograms) is stored.

The Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers said it discovered the missing syrup last week during a routine inventory where empty barrels were found at the site at St-Louis-de-Blandford, Quebec. Officials initially kept the news quiet, hoping it would help police solve the crime.

Anne-Marie Granger Godbout, the executive director of the federation, said that while it isn't unusual for individual maple syrup producers to have stock stolen, having millions worth of syrup stolen is "unusual".

"It's the first time something like this has happened," she said. "We've never seen a robbery of this magnitude."

She said the disappearance of the stock wasn't obvious at first in the huge warehouse. The facility alone houses nearly the equivalent of half the entire U.S. production of maple syrup in a year, she said.

"The U.S. market is the main market for maple syrup, about 75 percent of Canadian maple syrup is directly exported to the U.S.," she said. She noted the theft was particularly ill-timed after a disappointing 2012 season for U.S. producers, triggering more demand for Canadian syrup.

She said auditors would require a few more days to determine how many of the 45-gallon barrels have been emptied.

Theft of stock at the individual producer level prompted the industry in Quebec to group inventory in locations such as this, Granger Godbout said.

Aparna's Cookbook: Slow cooker recipes

Meat and veggies at low for 8 hrs. Before and after.

I am a great fan of slow-cooking. The flavors are retained, and you need less grease to facilitate cooking. A friend I made in Boston often baked me dinner (for about 2 hrs). At the end of the day, it felt delicious and very satisfying. Last night, I decided to put my slow-cooker to use and picked some random veggies from my pantry- most preferably non-starchy veggies like tomatoes, onions, celery, carrots, pepper and mushrooms etc. (Some recipes might call for potatoes though). I threw in a few mutton pieces that were marinating for a curry. (Yeah, totally random). Then I switched on the cooker and went to sleep. In the morning, I was greeted with a delicious aroma of the slow cooked goodness.

For beginners: 1. Resist the temptation to take a peek, though you might give a stir into one hour cooking.
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 2. Don't use frozen meat. Thaw well before you cook it.

It is a good option for traditional recipes that ask for long cooking times, ?perfect for a working man/woman with long day out with very little energy to spend in the kitchen after a tiring day at work, and even an?hassle-free?extra dish or two when you have guests coming over.

I will post recipes while I perform the experiments. If they go well, you will know it is safe. If some of them go ?awry, you will know what to avoid. Here's to cuisson lente.
