Samsung Galaxy Note II to feature a 5.5-inch display, narrower body

Previous reports suggested that Samsung was working on a sequel for its wildly successful Galaxy Note smartphone.?The follow-up ?phablet? was said to feature a larger unbreakable plane?display and a quad-core processor. According to an anonymous source speaking with?GSM Arena, the Note II will be equipped with a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display and a design inspired by Samsung?s Galaxy S III smartphone. Despite the larger screen, the width of the device has reportedly been reduced. It was originally said that the handset would launch in October to compete directly against Apple?s upcoming iPhone, but?Samsung has seemingly moved the release date up to September to beat Apple to the punch. The website?s source was unable to confirm the Note II?s processor, RAM or camera.

Trollhaugen Ski Shop in Dresser, WI was awarded the 2011 SIA SnowSports North Central Retailer of the Year Award for their contribution and commitment to the growth of the snow sports industry. Owned and operated by the 2nd and 3rd generations of the Rochford family, Trollhaugen Winter Recreation area has been an icon of the Midwest snow sports scene since 1950. John Wright, buyer at Trollhaugen Ski Shop, took some time out to give us some insight on how to be a winning retailer and the challenges he has faces.

SIA: How did you get started in the industry?
JW: I knew from the first time that I skied that this would be how I would spend the rest of my life. My first job was teaching skiing at a small area in Houlton, Wisconsin called 8 Flags over Birch Park. I was 16 years old and thought I had died and gone to heaven. From there, I worked in retail, moved on to being a manufacturer?s rep, and finally back to retail. To quote Max Marolt, ?It?s been a great ride.?

SIA: Tell us about one of your top retail success stories?
JW: Without question, our greatest challenge and our greatest success was battling our way back from the fire in 2008. The shop was destroyed by a devastating blaze that May. It took the entire summer to settle with the insurance company, and all fall to rebuild. We finally reopened on Christmas Eve 2008 with accessories only. The following season we came back full force with clothing, equipment and accessories. We are the only full service, full line ski shop at a ski area in this part of the country. Something we are all very proud of.

SIA: Words of Wisdom?
JW: If I were to speak with someone just getting started in the industry, I would try to impress upon them the value of following and never losing their passion for the sport. Too often the day to day grind gets in the way of continued participation in the sport we loved so much that we chose to make it our career.

If I can think of one negative that I have observed during my tenure in the industry, it would have to be that many of the principals in the business are no longer participants in the sport. Too many creative decisions are made by non-skiers or boarders. And to this fact I believe we have taken a giant step backwards.

The Israeli Gymnastics Championships took place Saturday, June 23rd in Tel Aviv and brought the audience some big surprises.

Gymnastics is not as popular in Israel as Soccer, Basketball or even Tennis, not even close, so even the biggest gymnastics meet of the year, Nationals, are free of charge. Just come and watch, please?

18 women competed. The Seniors included only 6 girls this year.

Over 20 years have passed since Israel sent an Artistic woman gymnast to the Olympics. And this time it?s Valeria Maksyuta?s turn to bring some light and acknowledgement of Israeli gymnastics to the world.

Maksyuta is known for her Vault. In May she even did the unbelievable and successfully passed tough Israeli criteria to qualify to London: Maksiyuta needed a 1-12 place in the all-around or finishing top 6 at Europeans.

What wasn?t expected on Saturday, was to see Maksyuta standing on the podium and taking ?only? the bronze medal. 3 falls from the Balance Beam just couldn?t be fixed by another apparatus, and the girls from Hapoel Tel Aviv, the decorated club that brought Israel more than 20 national champions over the years, took advantage of Valeria?s ?bad day?, claiming the first 2 places.

Israel?s new all-around champion is Nofar Cohen, a 17-year-old with limited international experience. Second was Hadas Koren, Nofar?s teammate, also 17 with about the same international exposure.

Maksyuta still dominated Vault, as expected.

After the competition, Israeli sports websites started analyzing what happened to Israel?s long awaited Olympian.

They question how ?important? this meet was for Valeria. In less than a month she will stand at the London O2 arena and try to hit her best competition ever. Let?s just hope that Nationals were a step towards it.

This misfire should help her refocus to peak for Olympics.

A genetic study of thousands of specimens of sharks and rays has uncovered scores of potential new species and is fuelling biologists? debates over the organisation of the family tree of these animals. The work also raises the possibility that some species are even more endangered than previously thought.

Sharks and rays are key predators in marine ecosystems, but the life cycles and population numbers of many species remain poorly understood. The family tree of these animals ? which are part of the elasmobranch subclass ? has proved similarly opaque, with little agreement among researchers over their evolutionary relationships.

Gavin Naylor, a biologist at the College of Charleston in South Carolina, and his colleagues sequenced samples from 4,283 specimens of sharks and rays as part of a major effort to fill the gaps. The team found 574 species, of which 79 are potentially new, they report in the Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History.

Naylor says that he was ?flabbergasted? by the result, especially because the sequencing covered only around half of the roughly 1,200 species thought to exist worldwide.

The huge number of new species found raises immediate conservation concerns ? the reason that some of these purported new species have gone undetected is probably their close resemblance to already-identified species. The populations of such species may, therefore, be even smaller than estimated, as what was thought to be one population may instead be several smaller populations of separate species.

For example, Naylor?s work suggests that the endangered scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini) is actually two separate species. ?Scalloped hammerheads in general have taken a huge hit, so it may be even worse than has been documented if there?s more than one species out there,? he says.

Naylor is now working on a project with the US National Science Foundation to catalogue the diversity of sharks and rays and is working to assist the International Union for Conservation of Nature to map which species are where in the world.

?This will have an impact on what is considered endangered and the fragility of different organisms,? he says. ?These are sentinel species of all sorts of other organisms in the sea which are probably undergoing similar or worse kinds of impacts.?

Circling the answer
One of Naylor?s collaborators, William White, an ichthyologist at the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in Hobart, says that their work also highlights some of the problems with the use of genetic information in zoology.

The increasing use of molecular techniques provides a new means to scrutinize the relationship between sharks and rays, he says. But it also shows that some of the existing ideas about their relationships are problematic. ?Part of the problem is some researchers mining data blindly without a good understanding of where that data has come from in the first place and presuming the names are correct which in many cases they are not.?

White and Naylor stress that molecular techniques are only of one many available tools and should be combined with conventional taxonomic work.

Ximena V?lez-Zuazo is a biologist at the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan and the lead author of a 2011 paper² that Naylor says suffers from some of the flaws that stem from relying solely on molecular information. Though she strongly defends her group's work, she agrees that shark phylogeny is still a work in progress.

With the dark cloud of Europe?s ongoing financial crisis still hanging over the world financial system, the Federal Reserve opened a two-day meeting?Tuesday?with speculation swirling that policymakers could announce more stimulus to boost the U.S. economy.

A crucial Greek election over the weekend eased fears of an imminent financial disaster in the eurozone by handing?victory to New Democracy, a center-right party that supports Greece staying in the currency union. That means, for now at least, investors can stop worrying about the market chaos that would follow a Greek decision to?leave the eurozone.

Now the focus shifts to the Fed and how it might play its next hand.

Recent reports, including two straight months of weak job growth, suggest?economic growth is slowing again after a tepid recovery. That sets the stage for?Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke to ask central bankers to approve more stimulus, although the options are limited. In?testimony this month Bernanke said the Fed stands ready to act if needed.

Opinions are divided over what the Fed will do.

Some economists expect policymakers to extend ?Operation Twist,? a program launched last fall that adjusts the composition of the government bonds held by the Fed by swapping short-term assets for longer-term assets. The idea is to push down long-term interest rates, making it easier for businesses and consumers to get credit. The program is due to end?June 30, although the?Fed could opt to extend it beyond that date.

Others are hoping for something stronger, such as another massive bond-buying program known as ?quantitative easing,? or QE, in which the Fed essentially?prints?money to buy long-term mortgage or Treasury bonds.

That would be?controversial?because past efforts have had a?questionable success rate, and it brings with it the risk of inflation down the road because it increases the money supply. Also, economists say the Fed is likely to want to keep something in its arsenal in case the?economic outlook worsens further?over the summer.

An extension of ?Operation Twist? is?the most likely first step, according to Former Richmond Fed President Al Broaddus.

?I think if there?s a significant risk, and action is needed, they may need to do something this week,? Broaddus told CNBC. ?My guess is it will be some kind of modification of Operation Twist.?

He said the?focus of the meeting would be?domestic U.S. conditions with some discussion of the eurozone crisis.

Barclays Capital strategists Alan James and Edmund Shing are also expecting an extension to the Fed?s Operation Twist, pointing to weakness in manufacturing output and in consumer sentiment.

?The soft patch in U.S. economic data keeps getting larger,? they wrote in a research note Monday.

One of the only other options open to the Fed is to adjust interest rates, which are already at record-low levels near zero. In January the Fed said it plans to hold down rates until late 2014 to sustain the economic recovery. The Fed would now have to signal to the market that it plans to hold rates down even further into the future.

The worsening debt crisis in Europe and fears over whether?Congress will hold off on tax increases and government spending cuts that are supposed to start in 2013 -- also known as the ?fiscal cliff? -- are weighing on consumer and business confidence.

Signs that Europe?s woes, which investors fear will have negative repercussions on the U.S. economy, are far from over were seen Monday when Spanish borrowing costs soared, with 10-year bond yields hitting 7.30 percent -- the highest in the eurozone?s history and above the rate that has forced other struggling euro-area nations to seek an international bailout.

Still, the troubles in Europe shouldn?t factor too heavily in the Fed?s plans this week, said Dino Kos, a former New York Fed executive vice president. Weakness in Europe should already be factored into the Fed?s forecast, he told CNBC.

?It shouldn?t really affect their thinking, although the situation has obviously gotten worse,? he said. ?The way it should impact their thinking is does the European slowdown affect U.S. growth, and does the growth then come down to such a degree that they need to counter it??

Kos said the best position for the Fed this week would be to hold fire, given the potential negative consequences of the fiscal cliff.

?Do you want the Federal Reserve to have something in reserve?? he said, noting that there are many uncertainties surrounding the fiscal cliff, given its timing, and the uncertainties about what the political situation will be at the end of the year.

?I would say they should wait,? he said.

New Delhi, June 19 (IANS) Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahai Tuesday launched a pilot project under the Clean India Campaign at Qutub Minar here with the aim of providing quality services to visitors at tourist destinations.

According to ministry, in the first phase of the campaign, 36 monuments have been identified by the ministry and the Archaeological Survey of India.

Speaking on the occasion, Sahai urged corporates, celebrities and public to join hands for the campaign.

The campaign was a part of efforts to increase foreign tourist arrivals to 12 million under in the 12th Five Year plan, Sahai said.

Under this campaign, we would focus on 100 monuments for maintenance, he said.

Sahai added that under the pilot project, Indian Tourism Development Corp (ITDC) would take care of the upkeep of the Qutub complex while NGO Prayas would help monitor the implementation of the project.

He also unveiled the seal and logo of the campaign as a part of the ceremony.

Culture Minister Kumari Selja was also present on the occasion, along with ITDC Director General Shankersinh Vaghela, parliamentarian and actor Shatrughan Sinha and Formula-1 racer Narain Karthikeyan.

Yahoo has hired former Google director and media veteran Michael Barrett to help lead its efforts to reemerge as an entertainment and information destination that wins advertising revenue.

Barrett, who will take the title of Chief Revenue Officer, is one of new interim CEO Ross Levinsohn's first key appointments, underscoring signs that Yahoo -- a company that has suffered from strategy flip-flops under successive CEOs -- is now thinking of itself as more of a media company than a technology company.

Those close to Levinsohn have said he is committed to building out Yahoo's own video programming and striking more syndication deals in pursuit of ads that command a higher price.

This will be the second time that Barrett and Levinsohn have worked together. Both were once at Fox Interactive Media where Barrett also held the title of Chief Revenue Officer and oversaw worldwide revenue for properties including MySpace and FoxSports.com.

Barrett was most recently at Google where he led integration efforts following the acquisition of digital advertising platform Admeld Inc where he served as CEO.

He will assume his new position in July and be responsible for Yahoo's ad revenue and operations globally.

Generic display advertising has lost favor to search-based ads and other more interactive formats but still generated $12.4 billion in U.S. industry revenue last year and should produce $15.4 billion in 2012, according to eMarketer analyst David Hallerman.

Yahoo's share of that has been slipping, however, as advertisers turn to Google, Facebook and others. Video ads, while still a small part of the market at around 6 percent, are more promising, growing more than 50 percent yearly.

Sophos Virus Removal Tool 2.0

A recent post on Sophos's Naked Security blog celebrated the updated Sophos Virus Removal Tool 2.0 (free), noting that for 27 percent of users it found threats other antivirus products missed. That may well be, but in my own testing Sophos alone did a really terrible cleanup job.

Off to a Bad Start
Typically you'll grab a free cleanup-only tool when malware on the PC prevents installation of a full-scale desktop antivirus. It's perhaps telling that the use-case described in the Naked Security post involves running Sophos after another antivirus. With another product doing the heavy lifting, Sophos might well find leftover malware scraps.

Unlike Emsisoft Emergency Kit 2.0 (free, 3.5 stars), another free, cleanup-only antivirus, Sophos needs to be installed before you can use it. Installation is quick and easy, when it works. However, one of my test systems can only run in Safe Mode because a ransomware threat totally takes over if it boots into normal Windows. Sophos can't install in Safe Mode and hence didn't clean this system at all.

The product's main window is just a welcome screen with a button to start scanning. Automatic updates will come this fall; in the meanwhile users should just download a new copy before each use.

Sophos scans memory for active malware first. If it finds any threats it pauses and reports what it found. When you click to continue, it cleans up the threat in memory and proceeds with the scan. In some cases a reboot is needed to clean the in-memory threat, and the scan restarts automatically after reboot.

At least, that's what is supposed to happen. On four test systems, Sophos could not remove the in-memory malware. When that happens, the scan is over. There's no option to proceed with cleanup. Product Manager Shai Gelbaum explained "we had a few incidents with fast file infectors where scanning memory while malware was resident infected all the files we touched." That may be the case, but I haven't seen any other antivirus that totally abandons scanning if it can't remove in-memory malware.

Another test system displayed a different kind of problem with in-memory malware. Sophos detected it, offered to clean it, and requested a reboot. After rebooting, Sophos detected the malware, offered to clean it, and requested another reboot. I let it go through this cycle six times before concluding that it really, truly was not ever going to finish a scan.

So, for one reason or another, Sophos couldn't do anything at all to clean up half of my twelve malware-infested test systems. That's certainly a bad start.

On the systems where it managed to finish a scan, Sophos detected 81 percent of the threats and would have scored 4.7 points for cleanup. The highest score achieved using my current malware collection was 5.6 points by Emsisoft.

Under my previous malware collection, Norton AntiVirus 2012 ($39.99 direct, 4.5 stars) managed 7.1 points, Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus ($39.95 direct, 4.5 stars) took 6.9, and the free, cleanup-only Comodo Cleaning Essentials (free, 4.5 stars) managed 6.8 points.

4.7 points would be an okay score for Sophos, but that doesn't factor in the systems where Sophos couldn't complete a full scan. Including all twelve systems, Sophos detected 53 percent of threats, the lowest detection rate among products tested with my current malware collection. Its score of 3.0 points barely escapes being the lowest ever. That dubious honor goes to Anvi Smart Defender (free, 1 stars), with 2.9 points.

Egypt Violence: Cairo Row Triggers Gunfight, Reports Of Deaths

CAIRO, June 17 (Reuters) - A dispute between street vendors in Cairo turned into a gunfight in the early hours of Sunday, according to local media reports, with conflicting casualty tolls that could not be immediately confirmed.
The website of the state-run Al-Ahram newspaper reported that the army and police had deployed to contain the confrontation in the Cairo district of Sayyeda Aisha on Sunday, the last day of voting in Egypt's presidential election.
The Al-Ahram report did not give a casualty figure.
But the website of the independent Al-Youm Al-Sabie newspaper said two people had been killed and 15 wounded.
Al-Shorouk, another independent newspaper, said on its website the violence had claimed eight lives. The news reports began to filter out around 2 a.m. and officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
Sunday is the last of two days of voting in the Egyptian presidential election runoff between the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsy and Ahmed Shafik, Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister.
Both have promised to restore law and order, which Egyptians complain has been lax since Mubarak's rule was brought to an end by a mass uprising last year.
