CNBC-TV18?s special show Beyond Cheque Book looks at India Inc?s attitude towards philanthropy.
India has always had a rich heritage in philanthropy. We are culture that venerates giving and for a long time giving has been a private act, intimate more individualistic. But in recent times, we are now seeing a trend towards more corporate philanthropy.
However, how much does India Inc give? Is the giving more in the form of cheque book giving or is there a greater focus today on understanding the impact and measuring outcomes. According to investment guru Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, there are three aspects to philanthropy; one is the standards we set for others, the empathy we feel and thirdly the meaning behind and the implementation of the charity done.
?I have progressed somewhere in selecting stocks, but very little in the charity I do or in the manner in which I do,? he said.
Vidya Shah, executive director and head of the EdlGive Foundation talks about India Inc?s attitude towards philanthropy with Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, Amit Chandra, MD of Bain Capital; Rashesh Shah, chairman and CEO of Edelweiss Group and Anu Aga, ex-chairperson of Thermax.

Q: I have heard you say before that when are selecting a stock you look at the strategy, look at the company, you look at the management and then you leave the rest to god. Do you have a similar approach in philanthropy?
Jhunjhunwala: I am 52, and I am still young. As time progresses, people mature and see life at its truest levels and that?s when one starts thinking about the meaning of things. I am still evolving as a human about what I should do with my wealth. I have decided to donate a minimum amount it, but what I would like to say is that I don?t think my thoughts are very mature still, about how I am going to achieve the social or the charitable ends in my life.
I would like to point out one important thing which is that I don?t look at charity as financial charity. I think there are three aspects to charity. I think the first and most important aspect is the standards that we set for society. I think that is the greatest charity that we can contribute. We say India today is nation which is harassed by corruption, but we got to look at ourselves and understand what social standard I am setting for others. I think that is most important and most lasting contribution of charity an individual can make.
Second I think is the empathy we that towards others who are not as well-off as we are. For example, the help at home have children who are of the same age as of my children. They play with my children and I see the enjoyment they get, but then I wonder if they don?t miss htier children. I can take an attitude and say that I am Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, I have the wealth and he is some poor boy from Bihar, so what right does he have to stay with children. Instead of that, my conscious feels pricked looking at the way he plays with my children, because I know he will be missing his own children. So instead of trying to condemn that man, I should try and empathise with him. I think that?s the second more important form of charity.
Third point is I feel that for corporate India the financial amounts are important, but the idea and the manner of implementation is what is very important. I still have the quest to learn, it?s a journey and not destination. I have progressed somewhere in selecting stocks, but very little in the charity I do or in the manner in which I do.
Q: We have the market to evaluate company performance, strategies for everybody to see and analyse. Do we need somewhat similar approach to the way we start looking at what investments we should be making in the social sector?
Chandra: Yes and no, because when you make investments you are often thinking of what financial return you can make from this. I think the moment you start looking at the social sector, there is a whole dimension which is added to it which can only be explained by compassion. If you want to give to an NGO that serves the mentally challenged segment and you donate money to them, the impact at the end of the day is the fact that the child is taken care of; you are not going to be able to measure impact the way you can for a company.
So I think there is a whole aspect of empathy and compassion that you need to layer on to normal performance criteria that you use in the corporate world. I think without that, it becomes tough and in fact it becomes an excuse for most people not to give. They will say that we don?t know whether our money is being used well. I know lots of companies we invest in are not using the money well, but that?s not an excuse not to invest. So while we should definitely be very focused on performance of the not for profit sector like we would for the corporate world, I think we do need to also combine performance with this whole aspect of compassion when looking at the segment.

Medicare covers health care for 49 million seniors and disabled people, providing essential protection against unpredictable medical costs in retirement. But the program is widely acknowledged to be in serious trouble. Its giant trust fund for inpatient care is projected to become insolvent in 2024, meaning that payroll taxes collected will not be enough to cover the full cost of expected benefits.
Many pieces of the Coburn-Burr plan received bipartisan support in proposals last year from two commissions on the national debt, House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and even President Barack Obama. Those include limiting the use of private supplemental insurance by seniors, raising premiums for upper-income beneficiaries and revamping Medicare's copayments to provide better protection against catastrophic costs while requiring greater financial responsibility for routine medical bills.
Like Ryan, Coburn and Burr would gradually raise the eligibility age to 67.
But their plan also differs in several important ways.
It would start the transition to a system dominated by private insurance plans in 2016 instead of waiting a decade, as Ryan has proposed. Private plans would compete with a government-sponsored program, a retooled version of today's Medicare. Seniors would get a fixed amount from the government which they could apply toward a private plan or the government plan modeled on Medicare. Benefits would not be spelled out, but all plans would have to meet a test of basic insurance value.
"We have created a competitive bid model much like Part D ? the Medicare prescription benefit," said Burr. "Across the spectrum, some seniors would go for lower premiums and some for higher premiums and richer benefits."
Another key difference with proposals from Ryan and Obama is that the new plan would not attempt to cap the future growth of Medicare spending, relying instead on competition to hold costs down.
The proposal has not been reviewed by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, but Coburn and Burr say it could save $200 billion to $500 billion over a decade.

German auto maker Mercedes Benz is planning to invest $71m (INR350crores) to build its second and third car production lines at its Chakan plant near Pune, India.
The company is also planning to unveil the new A Class, B Class, a new SUV, a small coupe and one more product which will be assembled at its Chakan plant over the next two years and will also unveil 10 new models in India after their global debuts by 2015.
Mercedes-Benz Cars head and Daimler AG board of management chairman Dieter Zetsche said India is an important growth market for the company.
"We see high demand for our A and B Class segments in India and we plan to enlarge our dealer network and ramp up production capacities," Zetsche said.
The company has also built a paint shop in Chakan plant with an investment of around INR200 crore while the engines are assembled locally under contract by Force Motors.
Mercedes Benz India global sales board and vice president Matthias Luhrs said it is important to start local production for A and B Class.
"We hope to double our volumes with these models," Luhrs said.
Mercedes said that it has already invested INR6.5bn ($131.9m) in India and the current investment will increase the total investment to about INR10bn ($202.9m).

WASHINGTON, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Retail sales rose 0.4 percent in January over December, with auto sales down 1.1 percent and gasoline sales up 1.4 percent, the U.S. Census Bureau said Tuesday.Retail sales, including food service sales, adjusted for seasonal variations but not for prices rose to $401.4 billion on January sales that were 5.8 percent higher than in January 2011, the bureau said in a release.
Non-store sales, which includes Internet and catalog sales, dropped 1.1 percent month to month, while receipts at general merchandise stores rose 2 percent. Department store sales, a category listed under general merchandise, rose 1 percent.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) ? An Alabama man went on trial Monday on a capital murder charge in the death of his newlywed bride more than eight years after she drowned during a honeymoon diving trip in Australia.
Prosecutors contend Gabe Watson killed 26-year-old Tina Thomas Watson during a dive by turning off her air supply and restraining her until she lost consciousness. Watson, 34, hoped to collect on a modest life insurance policy, prosecutors said.
The defense argues the woman's death was an accident.
The trial has been a long time coming for relatives of Tina Watson, who died just 11 days after her wedding in October 2003. Watson pleaded guilty to manslaughter and served 18 months in prison in Australia, but he hasn't yet faced a jury.
"What's really important to us is that this go through the process that should have happened in Australia, that he has to stand before the evidence and answer to it," said Tommy Thomas, Tina's father, in an interview last week.
Meeting with attorneys before beginning jury selection, Circuit Judge Tommy Nail said Watson's trial would last at least two weeks. Potential witnesses have been subpoenaed from Australia, but it's unclear exactly who will testify.
While capital murder normally carries a possible death sentence upon conviction, former Attorney General Troy King agreed to waive the death penalty in return for Australia agreeing to deport Watson after he finished his prison term there.
The judge dealt the defense a setback before jury selection began when he threw out an attempt by Watson's lawyers to have King testify. Defense attorney Brett Bloomston argued that King put up signs and used social media to "promote" the Watson case during his re-election bid, which failed.
"He used this case as a political platform," Bloomston said.
Nail said such evidence had no place in the trial.
"I just don't see how he could offer any relevant testimony," Nail said.
Nail also rejected a defense request for additional evidence from prosecutors. "You've got 12,000 pages of documents. If you can't get ready for trial with that I don't know what else I can do," the judge told the defense.
Assistant Attorney General Don Valeska told the judge prosecutors would drop a charge of murder during an abduction.
The decision means prosecutors no longer must prove claims that Watson schemed to get his bride to go on their honeymoon trip, in effect kidnapping her. The state still must convince jurors that Watson planned the killing in Alabama with the idea of collecting insurance money.
Watson, who has remarried and was accompanied by his second wife in court, faces a sentence of life without parole if convicted.

The best rap records are usually rooted in reality, but fans have come to expect their favorite MCs to use a bit of poetic license when delivering their rhymes. That's not the case with Kanye West and Jay-Z, though: According to Def Jam VP of A&R Bu Thiam, the lyrics on the Throne's "N---as in Paris" — the video for which was released Thursday (February 9) — are as real as they come.
"What I realized in this process is that them dudes really rap about what they go through," Thiam told MTV News back in August after Watch the Throne was released. "I've A&R'd other albums, and people, sometimes they rap about somebody else's story or what they think is a story. But those guys, everything they rap about is what they're actually going through."
Take "N---as in Paris," for instance, which has music fans across the world shouting, "That sh-- cray."
On the song's hook Hov raps, "Ball so hard mother----ers wanna fine me," and while it sounds like an empty MC boast, the popular lyric is rooted in truth. Hov, who is a minority owner of the NBA's New Jersey Nets, was caught taking pictures with the University of Kentucky's men's basketball team during their NCAA tournament run last year. It all seemed like a harmless gesture, but contact between NBA personnel and potential NBA college prospects is prohibited. In April, the Nets were fined $50,000 for Hov's actions.

ScienceDaily (Feb. 9, 2012) ? Microscopic channels of gold nanoparticles have the ability to transmit electromagnetic energy that starts as light and propagates via "dark plasmons," according to researchers at Rice University.
A new paper in the American Chemical Society journal Nano Letters shows how even disordered collections of nanoparticles in arrays as thin as 150 nanometers can be turned into waveguides and transmit signals an order of magnitude better than previous experiments were able to achieve. Efficient energy transfer on the micrometer scale may greatly improve optoelectronic devices.
The Rice lab of Stephan Link, an assistant professor of chemistry and electrical and computer engineering, has developed a way to "print" fine lines of gold nanoparticles on glass. These lines of nanoparticles can transmit a signal from one nanoparticle to the next over many microns, much farther than previous attempts and roughly equivalent to results seen using gold nanowires.
Complex waveguide geometries are far easier to manufacture with nanoparticle chains, Link said. He and his team used an electron beam to cut tiny channels into a polymer on a glass substrate to give the nanoparticle lines their shape. The gold nanoparticles were deposited into the channels via capillary forces. When the rest of the polymer and stray nanoparticles were washed away, the lines remained, with the particles only a few nanometers apart.
Plasmons are waves of electrons that move across the surface of a metal like water in a pond when disturbed. The disturbance can be caused by an outside electromagnetic source, such as light. Adjacent nanoparticles couple with each other where their electromagnetic fields interact and allow a signal to pass from one to the next.
Link said dark plasmons may be defined as those that have no net dipole moment, which makes them unable to couple to light. "But these modes are not totally dark, especially in the presence of disorder," he said. "Even for the subradiant modes, there is a small dipole oscillation.
"Our argument is that if you can couple to these subradiant modes, the scattering loss is smaller and plasmon propagation is sustained over longer distances," Link said. "Therefore, we enhance energy transport over much longer distances than what has been done before with metal-particle chains."
To see how far, Link and his team coated the 15-micron-long lines with a fluorescent dye and used a photobleaching method developed in his lab to measure how far the plasmons, excited by a laser at one end, propagate. "The damping of the plasmon propagation is exponential," he said. "At four microns, you have a third of the initial intensity value.
"While this propagation distance is short compared to traditional optical waveguides, in miniaturized circuits one only needs to cover small length scales. It might be possible to eventually apply an amplifier to the system that would lengthen the propagation distance," Link said. "In terms of what people thought was possible with nanoparticle chains, what we've done is already a significant improvement."
Link said silver nanowires have been shown to carry a plasmon wave better than gold, as far as 15 microns, about a sixth the width of a human hair. "We know that if we try silver nanoparticles, we may propagate a lot longer and hopefully do that in more complex structures," he said. "We may be able to use these nanoparticle waveguides to link to other components such as nanowires in configurations that would not be possible otherwise."
Graduate student David Solis Jr. is the lead author of the paper. Co-authors are graduate students Britain Willingham, Liane Slaughter, Jana Olson and Pattanawit Swanglap, junior Scott Nauert and postdoctoral research associates Aniruddha Paul and Wei-Shun Chang, all of Rice.

EAST LANSING, Mich. A College of Osteopathic Medicine student has been awarded the prestigious Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award from the National Institutes of Health for his work on identifying the causes leading to cleft palate.
Youssef Kousa, a fifth-year candidate in the college's D.O.-Ph.D. program, will receive $65,000 over 21 months for tuition, fees and a stipend.
"I am excited and humbled by the opportunity," said Kousa of the award from the NIH's National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. "I hope that I can use this fellowship to give something back with my research."
The palate separates the oral and nasal cavities and allows breathing to occur alongside eating and drinking. Clefting occurs when there is cell dysfunction during palatal development. It is a common developmental defect with serious postnatal consequences, such as difficulty feeding and the inability to gain or maintain weight at critical neonatal periods.
Kousa is working under the direction of Brian Schutte of the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics. Schutte and his team identified a gene interferon regulatory factor 6, or IRF6 as being a major cause of clefting in humans.
The NIH award, co-sponsored by researcher Andrea Amalfitano of the College of Osteopathic Medicine, now will allow Kousa and colleagues to identify how clefting occurs due to mutations in IRF6 with hopes of designing interventions to prevent the birth defect.
Schutte's team has developed a mouse model that has begun to uncover several important facts about IRF6 and its role in palatal development. As part of the project, Kousa will adjust the amount of IRF6 provided during development and monitor whether clefting occurs and at what levels.
The highly selective Kirschstein awards are named after Ruth L. Kirschstein, renowned for her work in polio vaccine development and the first woman to direct an NIH institute.
